I actually in someway miss those anti-pompey rants of his. Ahhh... 'Pompey,' makes me think of whatshisface ... Skeletor, and was it 'The Cylons' from Battlestar Galatica?

Lost "it". What exactly is the "it" here. The plot? Certainly not. His characteristic grumpy tongue in cheek whine? Hardly. His deep rooted convictions? They are still there.

What prompted this thread and why poor old Godders?

Exactly. I am not poor I have at least £127.53 in my Post Office savings account and that will be worth a great deal more when they add my 0.5% interest in the next few weeks. Thank goodness for capitalism it will make us all rich. I also have enough small change collected in the tin in the scullery to buy my season ticket for next year so I'll have you know that relatively speaking I am quite comfortably off and can afford to support my life style.

You are rich you daft old goat. Certainly when compared with almost all citizens of the former Soviet Bloc. Tell me capitalism hasn't done well by you.

Scullery. What a wonderful word! Sadly fell out of the lexicon with the advent of dishwashers! You certainly haven't lost your age Godders.

Lay of the ageist language old chap. That's not the done thing these days.

With regards to the poor citizens of the former Soviet Bloc people like Abramovich wasting millions on Chelsea and his yacht etc. has done nothing to alleviate their poverty. When it comes down to it is about whether you believe in compassion or greed and from your post I have to assume greed is your motivator.

Sorry.I appear to be lost.Could you give me directions to your scullery? Actually the use of that arcane term leads me to believe you are impoverished nobility. Not Gussy Fink-Nottle by any chance?

I'm probably as old as you are. And no greedier than most of my fellows. Just a realist. Capitalism works, and gave birth to democracy. All the alternatives are pretty ghastly.

Capitalism is fine in theory, it just doesn't work in practice. Anyway, the poor was as in the abused rather than a reference to Godder's bank balance. But a bit of closet Marxism brightens up the afternoon. All power to the Soviets.

Despite the genocide against the Kulaks, the millions who died in the Gulags, and the brutal repression of all dissent from Havana to Vladivostok, why is it still fashionable amongst some bourgeois leftists to apologise for communism?

As an erstwhile student of history I think you need to view what happened in Russia in the context of what the country was at the time i.e. very similar to the set up in other European countries some three centuries earlier. Serfs were effectively owned slaves.Doesn't bode well when people who have been treated like that turn uppity.

They may have turned against a despotic aristocracy but replaced it with an despotic dictatorship - that's progress for you
