http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ego-Maestro-Marina-Ital-verge-extinction.html Dunno about classic? Rot buckets for the most part but i did like my Vauxhall Viva
Remember my dad having Austin Allegro and the bonnet flew open on the way to Withernsea We was screaming and my dad was as cool as chips and just pulled over and tied it up and off we went Had a Cortina too but no story! Austin was in a ****ty dull brown colour, Wasn't new
I wonder if any of the Allegro's that are left have the square steering wheel? Was it the Maestro that spoke to you?
We also had an Allegro in royal blue ( not a GT, way out of our price range). It was our first car, I loved it, even though it was proper ****. We had three more equally crap cars until we could afford a car each. Then we had two **** cars on the drive. Not anymore .
Had a selection of them Hillman Imp, heap of **** Rover SDI, great drive but it blew one of the head gaskets on the M1 Austin Princess had 2 of them, both rust buckets, one leaked quarter of a tank of petrol down the drain first time I fully filled it up ready to go on holiday Austin Maxi had 2 of them, one a 1500 the other a 1750 both great cars Morris Marina not imprested but quite quick Ford Cortina had 2of them, one of them I always carried a can of easy start
I thought that Rover was a great car - though I used to get a lift to Boothferry in one, so perhaps I just associated it with the joy of going to see Norman, Marwood, Mutrie et al.
my old man had a Hillman Hunter MAT 766f and then a Hillman Avenger CAT 319K. That was mid 70's its the only two car number plates i can remember. Was staying in a hotel t'other week and i had to go outside and check the number plate of my car to type in at check in!!
My old boy had some real ****e motors. A Triumph Dolomite in yellow was a disgrace but not as bad as his three wheeler Robin Reliant van, which was a khaki sort of colour. I used to be embarrassed when he turned up to watch me play football. Looking back it was understandable but I feel a bit ashamed of myself for thinking like that. He was a top bloke who grafted in a factory to provide for his family and couldn't afford a decent car. Sorry for being a maudlin old twat but looking at those cars takes me back to being a kid.
My old man has a couple of Opel Mantas, I can't remember The amount of times I spent my sundays at classic car rallies listening to a load of pasty looking blokes talking about gaskets and carburettor's. That said, I very nearly bought a classic mini a few weeks ago, So I think I'm catching the bug.
The Allegro was my first car, after that I had a Hillman Hunter, which I quite liked, but unfortunately, the police took it off me. They said it wasn't roadworthy. And I think they were a pissed off that it wasn't taxed, MOT'd or insured. Though me not having a driving license seemed to piss them off most. Funny that this thread's been started today, I bought a new motor this afternoon.
Austin cars = total ****. You could watch them rot in front of your eyes - surprised there are as many left as the figures quoted. Family throughout me growing up have had Hilman Hunter, Austin Princess and Vauxhall Chevette. Frankly if it's not German it's not worth bothering with - I don't mean any of that BMW ****e either.
Me mam had a Hillman Hunter. Bought it off a bloke in a pub. Luckily a mate of mine was a mechanic and rebuilt the pile of ****e for her. Twin webbers it had. Was lovely in the end. Me and the missus's first car was a Chevette. Loved that car. Always wanted a 2300 rally spec one. Bought a geunine vauxhall rear parcel shelf for mine to bolt my goodmans speakers onto (it didn't come with one). 80 quid that cost me. In 1984 when that was a lot of money! 80 quids worth of 3 ply with some carpet type covering. Lovely.
