Not sure if there is a thread like this so apologies if there is.

Personally, one player I would like to see at the Valley next year is Kevin Doyle from Wolves.

Surely too good for League 1 as he was linked with plenty of prem clubs a couple of years ago.

Scored as many as our strikers in a team that was relegated. Not sure what the fee or wages would be but I think him and Kermo would be a real threat.

I'd rather we signed one quality player than a handful of squad players, so if we were to spend our entire budget on one player it would be Darren Bent. Not realistic maybe, but he has said he is angry at not featuring for Villa, I'm not sure who would buy him and if we got him it would be a great boost for season ticket sales, and we could start thinking seriously about promotion next season. I've no idea if he's available on loan or not, so "realistically!!!" probably doesn't apply.

I thought the same about Doyle too, good decent honest player from what I have seen, good footballer and I think he might slot straight into the squad in terms of the ethos of the team

I think Doyle could well find himself back in the Premiership with a promoted club. He had a tough time with injuries and playing in a god awful Wolves team. Plus I think Wolves would command over a million - something I'd be surprised wether we have.

It will be interesting to see the released list from premiership clubs next week. Think we will be shopping there more than anywhere.

Personally I would rather have Ebanks-Blake from Wolves, but if you look at their entire squad there are a lot of players I would take, Doyle, O'Hara, Johnson, Ebanks-Blake, Sako so you must question how the actually managed to get relegated.

What are peoples thoughts on Lee Martin? I'm divided, clearly has ability but his attitude lets him down, could Powell work some wonders with him? Or would he be another Danny Green?

No to Lee Martin, overpaid has talent but not enough to justify what his wages would be. I don't really see what the point would be, I'm sure powell would rather sign a lesser talented harder working player on cheaper wages.

Have heard us linked with James Vaughan but not sure I can see that happening. Alan Judge is heavily linked and realistic right? I'd like to get the Argentinian Messi aswell to go with the Irish one.

with the 3 that we're about to flog, i'd be happy just to sign a midfielder. we're desperately light weight if they go, and those that remain are under paced or ageing

As none of us know the real financial situation, none of us know what "realistic" is.

I think the very best we can hope for is for CP to be able to spend the nett receipts of any sales and keep the wage bill the same as last season. In which case:
    --- sign Judge
--- sign an u21 RB who is content to bide his time in Solly's shadow for at least a season
--- sign a LM (either a good player on his way down the divisions like Lee Cook, though without his fitness problems, or a young player who has failed to make the cut at a big club like Hogan, though I would prefer more of a workhorse type)
    --- keep Fuller
and we're done. Not very exciting, but better than playing in Div One.

If we need to start selling off our best players, Solly, Wiggins, maybe Morrison and Hamer, to cut debts, then we would have to fill the gaps with frees, and remember that frees aren't free (unless they are rubbish). If they are any good, you end up paying much the same as for an equivalent player on a contract in enhanced wages and other inducements.

Only if a sugar daddy comes forward can we dream of more ambitious signings but I think Bent is way out of our league unless he has hidden fitness problems like Fuller and Haynes.

Unless we receive significant financial news (for good or ill) I think next season's task is to hang on in this division until some youngsters start to come through in 2014/15.

Agree with most of that, but you have contradicted yourself with your comment frees aren't free unless they are rubbish, then you say sign Judge.Well Judge is a free does that make him rubbish? There are a number of reasons that players run down their contracts and the reason Judge has is that he wants to be playing in a higher division. Also probably wants more money.

Sorry if I was unclear. I was just pointing out that if you sign a player generally accepted to be of a certain standard on a free, rather than an equivalent player for one million pounds, it is unlikely you will save that much money, and you certainly won't save a million. The laws of supply and demand will enable the player on a free and his agent to insist on inflated wages and other benefits. I am sure that is the case with Judge (and Tabb, another who would nicely fill a need for us if Ipswich are now content having signed Skuse).

Any player on a free who is content with moderate wages is likely to have it all to prove and most will indeed turn out to be rubbish (or, more politely, better suited to a lower tier).

I know you understand that, but we do have posters who write "Let's sell A, B and C for 5 million and sign X, Y and Z (who are just as good) on frees, then we will have gained 5 million". I wish it were that simple!

Some of the players that I think would be good additions to the squad (ones that would probably want a move to London too):

    Will Grigg - Walsall
    David Perkins - Barnsley FC
    Jamie O'Hara - Wolverhampton Wanderers
    Sam Baldock - Bristol City

I think that with Leon Cort, Micheal Morrison and Dorian Dervite, we are pretty settled for CBs, with Rhyos Wiggins, Cedric Evina, Chris Solly and Laurie Wilson, we should be okay in that area. What we need is some midfielders, and another striker. I would take Will Grigg over Sam Baldock, only because I don't know if our finances can stretch that far.

Baldock has been unpredictable too. He had a good season with West Ham in the championship, but then Bristol City (we know what happened to them this season).

Just thought of another striker that might be worth a punt:
    Billy Sharp - Southampton

We might not be able to buy him, because the Saints paid a bit for him, but a season-long loan.

I'm guessing he's not in favour with the Manager, Mauricio Pochettino, and he won't oust Lambert. And to top it off, he's a proven goal scorer in this league.

Perkins (be that as he may look like Boris) completely bossed midfield at the Valley on Football for a Fiver.
