First major trophy and relegation in the space of a week Takes to old "roller coaster season" cliche to new extremes doesn't it?
feel sorry for wigan ... paid high price for FA cup distraction and being clumsy in the past 2-3 games in the league
I feel for Wigan and their manager, they were very unlucky because of injuries. i know for the past 3-4 years they have been relying on their late season charge and manage to stay up but that would not work all the time, they can't start playing well every time after April and hoping to stay up, they need to play well form the start. If they played like how they played in the last 3 months all season they would of stayed up. I knew they were relegated from that swansea loss, they should of won that. good luck to them getting back in the premier league.
I honestly don't get what people have against Wigan. It really is quite bizarre, they're about as inoffensive as you can get. Carefull what you wish for as some genuinely loathesome ****s are coming your way in the form of Cardiff City. ****ers, their fans are disgusting. I've got a good few mates who are as well, having lived down here for so long and I hate them too!! Got Swansea in me!! And Hull? Yeah, great to have them back. Ditto Palace or Watford. Exciting times ahead.
Shame for Wigan to go down. For a club of their size to stay in the top flight for 8 years is an impressive achievement. I doubt many would have expected it would be possible when they were promoted in 2005. Winning the FA Cup, however, is something their supporters will talk about for many years to come. Coming back at the first go will be difficult for them though, especially were Martinez to leave and if they lose key players. Maloney, McManaman, Kone and Alcaraz could all attract interest in the summer for starters. They will also be in the Europa League next season and so if they get past the qualifying round, that league phase could be a problem because there are a lot of midweek Championship games so those Thursday nights would leave them playing catch-up. Next season's Championship could be difficult as I expect the likes of Bolton, Forest, Leicester, Ipswich and Leeds to be improved next season, while Charlton, Brighton and Reading are all likely to be in contention as well. Can't see them coming back at the first attempt and for a club of their size, it's likely to then get harder thereafter.
Would much rather them in the PL than Stoke. They play attractive football and attack, probably too much and that has ultimately been their downfall a la Blackpool. Been punching above their weight in terms of club size and financial clout for so many seasons, its still an achievement they stayed up so long, let alone won the FA cup. Can't see them coming straight back up though, especially with the extra games in Europe and probably losing some of their better players - Kone, McCarthy, Maloney, McManaman etc. Also makes the last games of the season pretty boring as there's no title/relegation fights. Only top 4 and that weird 3rd place playoff scenario which could occur.
