Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet says he will have to consider his future after failing to make the Championship play-off final.

The Seagulls were beaten by arch-rivals Crystal Palace in their semi-final tie.

Poyet told BBC Sussex: "I will analyse where we can go and myself as well and then sit down with the club.

"I have always said that all the time we keep improving I am going to be at this football club and the day we hit the roof, I'm not."
    Play media

He added: "I have got to think about myself as well sometimes.

"Every summer you sit down and analyse where you can go, where you can get or not and depending on that you have got a project or a way of getting better."

Poyet joined Brighton in November 2009, with the club involved in a relegation battle in League One. He guided the Seagulls to safety and then lifted the title in his first full season in charge.

After a 10th-placed finish in the Championship last season following their move to the Amex Stadium, Poyet led the side to fourth place in the table this season, the club's highest league finish since relegation from the old First Division in 1983.

The Uruguayan is under contract until 2016 but he has made no secret of his ambition to manage in the Premier League in the past, although he turned down a chance to take over at Reading earlier this season.

"I'm under contract but there are plenty of things we need to analyse," he added.

"The players have put this football club on a new level, they made this football club a name all over the world.

"Everybody now looks at this club in a different way; with an identity, with a way of playing football, and players want to come here to become better players.

"Now we need to see what we will do in the summer, address everything and check if we didn't hit the roof."

Brighton and Crystal Palace were level on aggregate heading into the second leg of their play-off semi-final tie on Monday night.

Albion had home advantage but a brace from Eagles winger Wilfried Zaha secured a 2-0 win and booked Palace a place at Wembley.

"I don't want to feel that bad because I feel it was a very good season," Poyet said.

"I will feel sad for a few days but apart from that, I am proud.

"If you care for this football club the way I care, you will be more sad than disappointed. Sadness is a feeling that is difficult to take away but the players gave everything."

I for one wouldn't say no to an up and coming young manager with a wealth of potential and a proper footballing philosophy.

I've seen Brighton play a couple of times, not really that impressed in truth... Do they really play fantastic football, or more likely, is Poyet just the latest flavour of the month because he's won a couple of championship games?

Maybe he's a good manager, but there are so many more experienced, more qualified and attacking managers out there who I think would be a much better fit for the club, before we go rolling the dice.

I saw this interview on TV and thought at the time that perhaps he had something tangible as opposed to hypothetical to go away and consider.
I know he was talking whilst saddened by his sides failure to clinch a chance at promotion, and perhaps that saddness was what l picked up on, but, Don't know why, just got a gut feeling that he may have been sounded out by NUFC.
No reason to even speculate on this, but really just felt it strongly that he had been approached.

I agree it's a gamble, but most are a gamble. The lacking of Premier League managing experience is a bit of a hindrance but he has done a very good job with Brighton and a strong League 1/Championship education is better suited for the Prem than even a strong La Liga/Ligue 1/Eredivisie education. Just my opinion and plus, his knowledge of the Championship could bring in some good British potential to the club aswell like Andy King or Will Buckley, We lack British steele

There's something in the water regarding Gus Poyet. I'm not of the opinion that Pardew should be replaced by literally anybody, but I certainly have faith in the abilities of this young manager.
Pardew's tactics and style have caused many of us to come up with a knee-jerk reaction to just get him out of here.

Let's see what the weekend brings ...

Ashley a Chelsea fan, Gus a Chelsea legend. Ashley witnessed first hand his style of football in the cup this year when we were played off the park. Will no doubt have taken the chance to schmooze with a legend of his 2nd favourite club.

I can smell it, its all coming together. I'm off to the bookies.

No he's a Chelsea fan. Just a common misconception by some of our support. I think Llambias actually confirmed this at some stage??

Not that it would matter, he played for Spurs and Chelsea <laugh>

Brighton haven't recovered from a losing position this season.

    That's a worry...

Thing is, there is going to be a world-class management reshuffle this summer, Poyet is just making it known he's available. <ok>

Benitez first choice but Poyet or Di Matteo if not.

I agree with that idea, in order of Rafa > Poyet > Di Matteo

Although today's Mirror suggest Fulham are keen to replace Martin Jol with Gus Poyet at the end of the season. Whilst Ashley & Llambias appear content with the "obsessively direct Football with a poacher up front" style of tactless lower league struggler Alan Pardew, according to Lee Ryder of the Chron.

I would suggest that Brighton are potentially a bigger club than Fulham.

It's a sideways move at best.

There will be some pretty good jobs available this summer, i'm fascinated to see where it all ends!
