Apologies if I'm wrong (and feel free to delete this whole thread Mods if I am), but I don't think I've seen a succinct poll such as this on the subject of whether Hughton should stay or go. I'm interested to see the overall consensus.
I voted stick with him, but he has to improve the style of play. I don't want to change manager and hopefully he can improve the football being dished out.
No way should he go. He has achieved his aims and should be allowed to build an even stronger side for next year. Im sure the focus will be on attack where last season was on defence (in the summer transfer window). We could have a very good side.
Perfectly reasonable thread, I want Hughton to stay because he inherited another persons team effectively, also at this level his more used to working with higher end players, so now he has a decent budget to fund a certain calibre of player, I'm very interested in who he'll bring in.
Have to be frank, unless there's been a significant breakdown between him and the squad (and yesterday's performance would suggest there hasn't been), I find the idea of giving him the boot now more than a little daft.
I can't believe I've voted to stick with him, but on reflection I'll give him about 10 games next year. If we are then still being subjected to dross then sack him. However, I've got a good feeling about next season, I don't know why but I have
KIO I'm not here to WUM but I'm just curious to know why on the basis of 1 good result have you decided to give him another 10 games? We went down that road with Keane and Jewell and it ended in near disaster! Do you think that Hughton is capable of attracting quality players to your club given the battle he has had this season?
I think this position will be pretty common, although I'd perhaps be prepared to give him a few more games. He absolutely has to completely renovate our attacking options, but I think anyone could see that so it will happen. So far, with the exception of Becchio all his transfers have been worthwhile (although I won't be best pleased if Kamara returns). If he can bring in the same quality of attacking players this summer, and play like we did on Sunday more frequently, then I think we'll all be behind him. The only reason I'd give him slightly more than 10 games is that I can see a significant number of players coming in. It's likely to take time for them to gel, like it arguably took us several games this season. If by late November/early December (so maybe 15-20 games?) things aren't looking better on the pitch, and our league position isn't healthy, then I'd back a change.
Must admit i wanted him gone last week but now the dust has settled and tensions are not running quite so high am prepared to give him another chance, not on the basis of one good win but that his objective was avoid being relegated, and he did that. Not been much of a fan of the football this season but some of his signings have been ok apart from wolfswilly which is a bit of a coup for us i feel,im looking forward to a couple more dear i say world class signings to come should make next season maybe a little more exciting least i hope so.
DHCanary, I would like to see Becchio given more of a chance myself. I think he has been really unfortunate to not being given more opportunities and the little time he had yesterday he grabbed an assist. I think he will thrive with good midfielders making runs to link up with him, rather than being isolated like he was against Everton. Also JWM, I think that tensions were running high and people were becoming frustrated, I don't think people have forgotten the poor run. I just think we now have been able to take a step back and assess everything more rationally. Well that's the boat I am in anyway.
Yeah, I'd like to see more of him before passing judgement. A striker line-up of Becchio, Holt, van Wolfswinkel and Hooper (for example) would be really strong. I was more questioning the Becchio move on the grounds of him not being involved, rather than the quality of the player.
Why would he go? I still believe we will beat Man City next week and end up higher than last year! He has signed the Wolf, so he has set the bar pretty high for squad development, so give the guy a chance to create his very own squad and show us that he can link solid defence to all out attack
Stick with him. Give him a chance to properly rebuild the squad. I think a lot of the reason we've played pretty much the same line up week in, week out is because he feels the back up players aren't good enough. If we're still playing as negatively as we have been recently when he has his own squad instead of a mash up of his and Lambert's, then something needs to be done.
I'm in favor of a long-term building of a PL squad and don't think knee-jerk changes are the way to achieve that. CH has an excellent playing profile at a top club and internationally for Ireland. I do think he will attract top players, as he has already done with Bassong, Turner, Snodgrass and Tettey, not to mention the absolute coup of RvW. Would they have come for Lambert, Martinez or Holloway as some have mentioned? They may have, but I have my doubts, especially in the case of Bassong and RvW. I think the football will improve dramatically when the remaining L1 and CL players have made way for quality replacements. So it's a definite yes for me.
Good poll. I'm firmly with the stick with him camp and I agree with the comments above about his signings. However, I agree that the style has to improve next year and that he should not be given long if it does not change.
I vote 110% to stick with him, let's face it, if he goes, we could end up with someone like Mick McCarthy! (eavsdroppers never hear good of themselves!)
It's a separate argument but the thread we had a few weeks back asking who we'd want in failed to really highlight many names. The fore-runners were Martinez, Poyet and Zola, all of which could yet be Premier League managers next season in their own right. There's probably plenty of managers abroad who we could consider, and the board undoubtedly would, but of the managers we're familiar with, there's nobody clearly better than Hughton available.
