Sunderland manager Di Canio was furious after Wigan handed his side a huge boost in midweek by losing at home to Swansea. While fans were delighted with a result which leaves Wigan still three points behind, Di Canio was in a rage. Some backroom staff at Sunderlandâs training ground celebrated the Wigan setback, seeing it as a result which virtually ensures they will remain in the top flight, with the Latics still to visit Arsenal. But Di Canio was having none of it and insists the mentality at Sunderland â to look over their shoulders at how other teams are doing â must change if they are to challenge for major honours. âI was angry as we fell into a trap and we canât do it again,â said Di Canio, whose side host Southampton tomorrow. âIn the future we cannot always look at other clubs. We have to deliver ourselves. "We have to have the mentality that if we play against Manchester United we are going to do everything we can to win the game. We are going to have to think positive and not think, âOK, if we donât win anyway, Wigan have got a tough game against Arsenal coming upâ. âHow is it possible to prepare ourselves for a game at the top level if we think like that? âIt was not my players, but the others. The players are completely focused for the next game as no one mentioned the Wigan result. âThe players are fine, but itâs other people around the training ground who are saying, âGaffer, fantastic result at Wiganâ. âBut we have to get a fantastic result ourselves on Sunday.â
Good on him. He says a lot of the right things, doesn't he... then again, what isn't a bit right-ish when he says it? Meanwhile... at Newcastle... Pardew leads the celebrations at Wigan's defeat vs Swansea
Now that's the kind of attitude that will get us somewhere.....lets win the last 2 games and finish on a high!
I watched that game and anyone that thinks Wigan are finished are stupid. I would take maybe 5/6 of their 1st team over ours. Make no mistake they were good and barring comical defending would have got something. Hats off to Swansea though, these 5 year plans etc I hear about get shot into the ground when you watch this team. 2 years in the prem, you'd think they had been there years. Football is not as difficult as these so called managers/ experts waffle, find the balance and you are off, keeping it might be a bit harder but a mad jock did it for 26 years so well done that man..
I remember a Scottish Manager called Alex Ferguson who was in charge of Aberdeen when they won the Cup Winners Cup. Interviewed after the game he was raging about how badly his team played and that they wouldn't be allowed to play like that again. He went on to be quite successful I think by taking the attitude that you can only influence what you do and if you do it right it doesn't matter what your competitors are doing. PDC might be the first manager we have ever had to show a similar mentality.
With every sentence that comes out of his mouth I have more and more admiration for the man. We've not had anything even close to PDC in my lifetime of watching SAFC. I think we may finally have found the right manager to sort our club out from top to bottom.
Well said Dorset. I've been saying for a number of years we needed a hypnotist or something to alter our mental attitude. PDC could well be the man to deliver.
