Shamed Sunderland fan Daniel Purvis is banned from matches for three years after hurling a flare at the Tyne-Wear derby. Purvis threw the flame in the away end when his team scored their first in the Toonâs 3-0 defeat. The 25-year-old Nissan worker then threw it to the floor. He appeared at Newcastle Magistratesâ Court and pleaded guilty to possessing a flare at a sporting event. The court heard Purvis, of Fieldway, Hedworth Estate, Jarrow, was sitting with the away crowd at the match. Sarah Robinson, prosecuting, said: âAt around 12.15pm, a steward, Mr Frost, was on duty at St Jamesâ Park. There is a section of the ground that houses the Sunderland away fans and Mr Frost witnessed the defendant in the away stand holding a lit flare in his right hand and waving it around.â Football fan District Judge Stephen Earl noticed Purvis had a previous conviction for criminal damage in Hull in 2010. He said: âWhat were you doing in Hull.â Purvis answered: âI was at a Sunderland away game.â District Judge Earl said: âI just knew you were going to say that. I noticed it was at a time when Hull were in the Premiership. You see, you do have something related on your record.â Fining Purvis £230 and giving him a three-year football banning order, District Judge Earl added: âIâm also someone that follows football. Obviously, youâre a Sunderland fan. âItâs a shame because Iâm sure you enjoy watching your team, but now you wonât be able to do that. Now you will have to watch them at the pub or at home. âThis is a public safety issue, throwing flares anywhere in a football ground is a public safety issue.â Purvis, who earns up to £20,000 a year working for Nissan, made no representations and accepted the ban. He was also ordered to pay 85 costs and a 20 victim surcharge http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/tyne-wear-derby-sunderland-fan-who-3568977
Good, sorted our troublemaker. How are the mags doing going through the phone book to filter our theirs?
I know Dan and I'm surprised by this because he's actually a really quiet, shy and well liked lad. Funny what alcohol turns some people into.
How does he feel about the ban? Bet he's buzzing it's not a life ban, esp if like you say and he's a good lad.
He knows he's been a knacker mate and he is just thankful it wasn't a life ban, which he was expecting.
It's amazing that the Chronicle manages to label our fan that did it - but also says that others (including Newcastle fans) have done it but nothing has yet been done to this - do you think this "we fill our ground all the time" ****e is because they let any troublemakers in and don't punish unless they're in the away end?
they did say prior to the match that any trouble makers would be made examples of, be alot of nags cacking it now, especially the horse puncher and all the other morons caught on tape
What was that 'explosion' at the Stoke match? a woman in front of me jumped up. Do supporters know that Flares , fireworks are banned at the SOL. If someone near me done that i would grab them and take them to the nearest steward.
Every scumbag who does **** like this needs the book throwing at them. I personally think this SAFC lad should have been given a much heavier ban given he's been done before. If he was that nicer a lad he wouldn't have got wasted AGAIN and put himself into the position to be a thug again And before anyone accuses me of bias, if horse punch boy is proven to have attended the game he should be given a life ban as well as possible criminal prosecution. The same goes for our arseholes who wrecked the Wigan goalposts. Zero tolerance is the only language some of these people understand. If you know you turn into a tit on the beer....and there's a risk in being a thug..... there's a simple solution... don't drink.
No arguments - just seems that the report is heavily biased against us! They all should get what's due to them not one rule for one and one for ev eryone else!!
You never made mistakes when you were young and full of spunk? He's a good lad and believe me when I say, this isn't typical of his behaviour.
Might be going against the general opinion but for me he should never be allowed near a football stadium again never mind in one.
Ok - If you are stupid enough to take a flare into a football ground then regardless of whether he's a nice lad or not it shows he had intent to use it and he should have got a life ban, someone could have taken it from him and thrown it into the home fans and it could have hit a child. He's very very lucky not to get a life ban. Aren't flares classed as firearms? 3 year ban is a touch for the stupid boy.
He had a vintage Newcastle top on didn't he? Do you not think the fact he was wearing a Newcastle top makes it irrelevant weather he was at the game or not. Surely the second you wear anything club related then you're representing a your club? for example, if someone wearing a Sunderland top mugs an old lady in the street on a none match day, then imo he should be banned for life.
I'm also a good mate of dan going back years since school and still regularly speak to him, I was at hull with him a few years ago and 2 lads were locked up when kenwyne jones scored, he was going mental celebrating next to me...
