1-1, Ajax dropped two points and now Vitesse and PSV can get closer to Ajax this weekend. This season might not be over after all...

What do you think of Mertens and Van Ginkel? Both have been 'bigged up' to me by friends in the netherlands

Mertens is a good player, good technique and pace but, BUT! Very complacent, inconsistent and he can be egotistical and predictable in his actions. Good, intelligent defenders have no problem dealing with him, mainly due to his height which is not much taller than a garden gnome.

Van Ginkel is a different case, though a bit more consistent than Mertens, his technique and his passing are above par but I can't see him being a class act player. I've seen a couple of games in which he played and there was one word that just keeps popping in my head: ordinary. He had a great season and he has been a solid and reliable player for Vitesse but nothing really stands out. He is one of those players that can be invisible for an entire game just doing the midfield passing and running but there is just nothing incredibly special about him I can think of. He is still 21 though, but he needs a couple of more seasons in the Eredivisie because in the EPL he would go straight into anonymity.

Monday morning update: Just when you think the Eredivisie title race is done it heats up again. Ajax were not able to take down SC Heerenveen, a point was all they got in the Amsterdam Arena on Friday night. PSV, Feyenoord and Vitesse had to take advantage this weekend to even think of having a chance to go for the title. PSV was first to go on Saturday night against relegation candidate AZ Alkmaar. PSV were very clinical and with a 1-3 win they at least were back in second place, three points behind Ajax. On Sunday Vitesse had a 'mission impossible': win the match against Feyenoord in De Kuip. Feyenoord are unbeaten at home and won 12 of their 16 home games and drew four times. And it showed, Vitesse were out of their depth and got overrun by the team from Rotterdam, 2-0. FC Twente were unable to take advantage as well, they drew against relegation candidate VVV Venlo, but they did come back from a 2-0 deficit to end the game at 2-2.

So on Monday morning the table now looks like this:

    1. Ajax 67 points 31 games +43
    2. PSV 64 points 31 games +57
    3. Feyenoord 63 points 31 games +23
    4. Vitesse 61 points 31 games 26 games

Games to watch for next week:

SC Heerenveen - AZ Alkmaar, Friday night 19:00 GMT
PSV- FC Groningen, Saturday night 17:45 GMT
NAC Breda - Ajax, Saturday night 19:45 GMT
Feyenoord - Heracles Almelo Sunday morning 11:30 GMT
Vitesse - Willem II, Sunday afternoon 15:30 GMT
