Newcastle boss Pardew’s ‘Euro dream’ dig at Sunderland

ALAN Pardew says Sunderland “can only dream” of emulating Newcastle United’s achievements in Europe.


United lost the 148th Tyne-Wear derby 3-0 at St James’s Park last Sunday – and Pardew is already looking forward to the chance to set the record straight.

Manager Pardew felt his team’s exertions against Benfica four days earlier in a Europa League quarter-final – Newcastle lost 4-2 on aggregate – were a factor in the defeat.

However, for the moment, Pardew – whose side face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns tomorrow – is focused on keeping the relegation-threatened club in the Premier League.

“It was a great day for Sunderland and it was, for us, a tough day,” said Pardew.

“But I would rather play and give it a good go in the quarter-final of the Europa League, and they can only dream of that.

“Next year, there’s always another game – and you know, in these games an in a managerial career, you get setbacks that are really not nice that you have to carry.

“For us, it’s done, it’s history, we can’t change it. We have to always carry it, like they have all the defeats we have put on them, so we will move on.”

The Benfica game was United’s 134th in Europe. Sunderland have played four games against continental opposition.

He drags the entire club down by constantly opening his mouth and saying stupid things.

All he's done here is make it so Sunderland will be even more fired up to beat us.

Yeah I don't agree with criticising him on this, this is the kind of spiel managers spout to defend their club.

Whatever people say about Pardew he won't have enjoyed last weekend's result, even it's purely for his own ego and professional motivations.
This is the talk of a hurt proud man and its only the kind of stuff fans spit out in a moment of foolish defiance.

Sunderland know all this histrionic stuff and it already fed into their passion to win the match. They wanted it more on the day, they were overdue a result so fair play.

The fact is if they really believed they weren't in NUFC's shadow then beating us on our own turf wouldn't mean diddly.
In my experience there isn't the intensity of hatred towards SAFC from the Newcastle side as there is the other way, which is telling.

You know we're still amongst a relatively small top-flight few that can say twice PL runners-up with Champs League experience.
It's a while ago granted, but whatever rubbish we're enduring now it's kind of missguided to seriously compare the two clubs within that context.

I'm not trying to start anything with this and I mean absolutely no disrespect to Sunderland, it's just fact.

What we can certainly do is take the result as a jolting barometer of just how far the club has been allowed to fall...

Yeah I'm not trying to pick a fight with what I'm saying, it's only my (albeit limited) experience amongst the fans I know.
I'm not saying it's gospel truth just my sense of it. Purely speaking as I find really.

Perhaps my own indifference in terms of a bitter, hateful view of Sunderland means I don't surround myself with it.
I think I've mentioned numerous times on this forum that I've never personally subscribed to the rivalry to any great extent.

I do believe though that in part that is because for the majority of my time supporting NUFC they have had the footballing
edge (which is what I meant by the shadow comment), but I accept the references I listed are fast becoming a distant memory.

But I'm sure it's a two-way street, don't worry about that! It usually is with everything

He really does say some stupid things. I remember when he said we were on a total different level to Everton.

Tried desperately to make sense of that, I failed though

But anyway why I think that it's ****e is because what you're saying is you wouldn't care a great deal if you beat us 3-0 at the SoL and if you and your fans did care that meant you were in our shadow
