I've been thinking... is a manager, over a season the most important element behind a teams fortunes or is it becoming more about the quality of a squad or back room?
If you look at the likes of Barca, they have a world class team but Guardiola got all the plaudits... would he have done so well with, say Espanyol?
Looking at some football clubs nearer to home... how much actual training do the likes of Fergie et al actually oversee?
I have a feeling that the game is changing to an extent where the playing pool and general coaching pool are more important that the manager.
Eventually the manager will be nothing more than a figurehead, a PR man if you like. Someone with charisma and personality who can say the right words in the right places.
'If' is an overused word but if we had got our January players in last Summer.. bedded them in and also added a set piece coach who helped deliver, say 5-10 goals from set pieces our season would be very different.... with or without AP at the helm.
    Just my view.

I think it has been a lot more like that for quite a while on the continent, and like everything else will eventually come in more here. Under that system the most important jobs for the manager are making sure that all the different coaches compliment what the others are saying and man managing the players, especially in terms of pre-match and half time talks.

Talking about managers, I heard this morning from my brother's mate's uncle's grannie's goldfish that Rafa is headed to the toon in the summer to replace AP.

    Just saying, like.

I know **** all about any element of football, really, but I have worked in a number of different organisations. The person a the head of that organisation is always hugely important, even if all he does (which is usually the case) is co-ordinate what everyone else does.

The most important thing in any organisation is thinking that what the organisation does is important, that it is going about it the right way and that what you do in that organisation contributes. If everyone believes that, everything else sorts itself out. Once people stop believing it, nothing is going to work.

Does Fergie oversee training ? Who cares. But the only reason I can think of why Man U has been the team to beat for the last 20 years is Fergie. Man U doesn't have any other advantage over any of the other major clubs, but they are still the club you have to nudge aside if you want a brief moment in the sun

On the flip side to Fergie, we all know how long it's been since Arsenal won a cup, they've had fantastic players, Fabregas, Nasri, Cazorla, Cole, Vermaelen and RVP to name but a few, yet the only thing they've had in common since their last win is Wenger. You can't tell me they've not had a squad CAPABLE of winning things, yet for some reason they just can't.

Man Utd have made winning the title this season look so easy. Whatever their system, it works well.

If the manager is not important, it seems at Wolves & Blackburn there are people who would disagree.

Everything was in place at those clubs, McCarthy leaving has seen Wolves drop like a stone.
Their board are clueless and are paying the price - as are Blackburn... they've never recovered since letting Big Sam go.

Would like the Rafa rumour to be true at least he actually has some pedigree but he's not exactly attack minded tho. An I think the manager's role may in time become less they always seem to be the sole reason for success and at the same time the scapegoat when everything goes completely wrong ignoring poor performances but in using the players at their disposal during a game to change it around and effect the game with formations, subs etc. to me they still are that important difference.

Given Harry looked on bemused at Samba putting himself upfront, it's quite plausible some players are just a law unto themselves. A good manager will have key inputs in tactics and training schedules, as well as building a rapport within the squad and creating his ethic.

They probably get a lot of unfair stick, but that's the position. They reap unfair benefits as well when it's all going dandy!

Blackburn have been ruined by Venky's. They know **** all a bout football. They claimed they would bring Ronaldinho in when there was no chance of that at all. And went on to hire Shebby Singh, who was just a professional footballer in South East Asia( Malaysia ) and was a much-ridiculed TV pundit
