As some have already pointed out, I wasn't drawing a comparison, merely arguing with the logic used.

You're a disgrace and a ****ing moron if you actually think that 'you should not speak badly of the dead, regardless of what they have done'. What the **** is wrong with you?

This is the most ironic thing of all - I lean conservative and don't think state money should be spent on her funeral; given her ideology, I doubt she would have been in favour of it herself.

An understanding of Margaret Thatchers actions and attitude towards football fans in the 80s would make having a minute's silence seem like not a good idea. She should be given respect though.

I think just reading through this rather sad and outrageous thread speaks for itself.
I think it would be ill advised to hold a minutes silence as it will only go to disrespect her and no doubt cause problems within the ground between those Thatcherites and those who do not remember her with any affection.
Suggest we keep national politics off this forum please and concentrate on supporting our team.

Thatcher did not play for England, did not manage the Saints and had nothing much to do with football. Regardless of what you think of her policies (and I personally do not care for them), she is no more deserving of a minute's silence than John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or David Cameron. Indeed, as her reputation is so infamously divisive, it seems likely that the silence would be boycotted by many who feel no particular affiliation towards her and those who strongly resented her. This in turn would only serve to damage the purpose of the minute's silence for future beneficiaries.

Mourn, if you wish to do so, but do not demand that others to mourn with you. Merely settle for their respect and sympathy.

Thatcher was the best option at the time otherwise we would have ended up with the likes of Kinnock ruining the country. Much the same as Blair was the best option at the time. This, unfortunatly is British Politics. PM's are elected more on their opponents unelectability rather than any meaningfull qualities they may have themselves.

I think the best judgment on this issue has been shown by David Mellor who I heard interviewed on the BBC this morning. He is obviously an admirer of Thatcher and served in her government but thinks the idea of a minute's silence at football matches to be an impractical idea, simply because so many fans, particularly in the North, in Wales, and in Scotland would not respect it. Personally, I wouldn't either.

An incredibly wealthy man wants to show respect for her? What a suprise! On a more serious note, she was a woman who had no affiliation to sport at all, why would she deserve a minutes silence at all football grounds?! It's incredibly obvious it would go down like a house on fire!

Dave Whelan, a guy who has respect for you unless you wear one of the replica football shirts that he has sold you and made his millions from.

As far as Thacher goes, just let her slip away into the ground quietly without any fuss, what is done is done. leave it to David Starkey to do the rhetoric.

Don't feel it is necessary for a minutes silence as she wasn't directly involved in football. However anyone celebrating her death is as far as I'm concerned an abhorrent person. It's effectively the same as saying she deserved to die for her politics, I wonder if those people think all the millions of people who voted for her deserve to die as well, I wonder who deserves to live? Probably just the people who have the exact same beliefs as them I would imagine.

I grew up in the south during the thatcher years but had no real political awareness, I remember the poll tax, miners strikes etc but never really paid it that much attention. It wasn't until I moved to the midlands, heart of the mining community that I really realised how despised she was by so many, and the damage that her policies caused to so many, it's no coincidence that so many of the sink hole estates in the north now are in the same areas that were so badly effected during the Thatcher years. Saying that, I am disgusted by the rhetoric coming from some regarding the death of a frail, elderly lady that has been out of politics for years. Whilst I didn't like her, I do believe that she acted in what she saw as the best way for the country, she was not evil, I think she truly believed in what she was doing and many benefitted, just as many were destroyed.
Back to the topic, a minutes silence is a terrible idea. It would not be respected anywhere, especially at grounds in The midlands and be more likely to incite trouble. I for one do not need to be reminded of her attitude to the average football fan, that is you and me, joe bloggs on the terrace.

I would not celebrate her life, but nor would I celebrate her death, that is just crass.
