What a great guy- makes complete sense in terms of what he says (I have posted the link underneath). Agreed, not everyone loved her and not everyone hated her, but still respects should be shown. Why make a bad name for ourselves down at St. Mary's when we don't need to. Some people saw her as a great leader and others simply saw her as a person who made their lives worse. She set new sights for women across the country- essentially a pioneer for British women. All I can say is I hope no Saints fan will sing or chant badly of her and if we are asked to undertake a minutes silence, that it is held. I personally believe that you should not speak badly of the dead.

Why? We don't have a minutes silence every time a former prime minister dies. Why should she be any different?

I don't have a massive issue with the woman but I also think a minutes silence would be disrespectful towards those whose lives were adversely affected by her rule.

 

Having a silence would just be inviting people to violate it. Better for all concerned that there isn't one, whatever your view of the woman is.

 

This. I was saying yesterday that a minutes silence would turn into a minutes booing at many grounds and that is never nice to hear.

 

Considering we don't have a moments silence for every PM's death having one for the PM that the working classes (traditional football supporters) hated the most would be a weird decision. It's not at all suppressing that many mega-rich football club owners are advocating it though.

 

Football- a traditionally working class sport. Thatcher- a ruthless right wing politician that crushed the unions. Why? Just because many respected and admired her doesn't mean everybody should pay tribute. She did some good things but did an awfull lot of bad. If individual clubs want to do it then up to them but I don't see why everybody should.

 

Dave Whelan suggesting they do it this weekend, and this weekend there is Newcastle vs Sunderland. Good luck with that, Dave.

 

It's an awful idea, why a Chairman of a football club is campaigning for their supporters to look like utter c***s I have no idea. I didn't particularly like the woman, but I would respect any silence held, many others would not though. The "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" thread on Red and White Kop Forums will give a pretty good indication of how this will end if clubs try and implement it!

 

She had no respect for ordinary, law abiding, decent supporters like we are - so why should we show her respect ?. I resent the way she trialled the Poll Tax on us Jocks, and pissed away billions upon billions of pounds of North Sea oil and gas revenue.

 

I think some comments about her have been disgusting and a lot by people that weren't even born when she was in power and those that were must ave thought she was the best option at the time or she wouldn't have been elected 3 times.

However a minutes silence is a bad idea and would provide the perfect platform to boo and disrespect her. I would imagine there will be plenty of anti Thatcher songs being sung anyway.

 

Right, and I suppose you wouldn't ever criticise Hitler for example, because you weren't born at the time?

 

Im talking about those who just jump on the political bandwagon on things like Twitter and just post vile abuse about her, many of which probably know nothing about politics and don't even vote.

I am not a Thatcherite and criticism is one thing but a lot of what has been put is just plain wrong when somoenes mother and grandmother has died.

Agreed. It will get completely and utterly disobeyed. And you have to respect anyone's rights to do so - especially in Wigan's case if commanded to by a club chairman who has already shown with previous comments over the last year that he has started to lose the plot!

When Whelan said that, I went to the Wigan site to see what their views were, expecting it not to be very popular. Instead I found a big fat silence. Suppose a football forum isn't the place to talk politics, but you'd think it would be mentioned, especially up north and in working class towns. Is raging on the Swansea site.

He wasn't directly comparing, just using the same logic. He, you would assume, didn't live through Hitler's reign, so he couldn't comment based on that logic, and hey, he was voted in, so must have been the best option at the time!

 

He's not. He's making a point in reply to the implication that people can not hold negative opinions on someone because they "weren't even born".

 

I agree with you completely on this. We are not saying that we support her, but her family is who we should not necessarily show respect to, but show decency to.

 

Thatcher wasn't an extreme dictator. She was elected 3 times to be the Prime Minister of Britain. She didn't commit mass genocides either.

 

I think the biggest joke is the 10m being used of tax payers money for her funeral.

Back to the topic no way should there be a silence, she made a lot of peoples lives a misery. Then she lived in luxury for her remaining years. I won't disrespect her death but can understand some that do.
