I was just browsing the Blackburn forums, to see how they are reacting to their current plight, and was surprised by a lot of discussion of "Lancashire United". I haven't really heard of such an idea before, but apparently there is a bit of support for teams like Blackburn, Preston, Burnley and maybe Wigan/Blackpool to come together and make one big club. I don't really know how realistic the plans are, and just how much support there is - but it is an interesting idea. Maybe in the future, some clubs are going to have to combine to really challenge, rather than slowly lose their fanbase to larger clubs on the TV (or a short trip away). Lancashire would probably be the place it would start, they have so many clubs there so close together from 'medium sized' towns which are very close to your Manchester and Liverpool clubs. Do you think it could happen?
No chance, too much hatred between sets of fans for that to work, Burnley, Blackburn and Preston all hate each other, would be like suggesting that Grimsby us and Scunthorpe formed one club when we were all in similar leagues
That's a dangerous path to go down, it sets us on the road to the American model where you end up with only 10-15 serious teams in the whole country and no depth whatsoever.
I think it could be quite a good idea, all of the grounds/ teams are close so not much travelling. Massive support/ fan base and everyone says there are too many games (players and managers) this would also reduce this
Horrible, horrible idea - both in terms of losing sight of the clubs' histories and also in terms of Man Utd and Man City being on their doorstep already.
Well Chazz, Mussie would love this idea as it 1) would mean that only one club presumably a side dominated by the former Hull City club would be featured on Radio Humberside and 2) with the exception of David Burns BA some of the other BBC sports journos would be sacked. The only problem with this plan is that Mussie would probably point out this still wouldn't be local. So if we can fill in the Humber with landfill from Grimsby and Scunthorpe (starting with the grounds and then the supporters and then the redundant BBC journos) then problem solved!
This calls for the revival of the 'Humber Barrier' plan!! Channel the river and end its tides. Deep-water canal passing the docks. Turbines on the barrier. More land for agriculture and development. Merging of the City of Hull with the south bank towns. Result: Humber City!!!
thought Humberside was dead.. it's only the southern press that refer to us as Humberside out of ignorance. East Yorkshire Jets sounds better
I don't think I've ever been less positive about freedom of speech. Shocking, shocking thought. My opinion of Blackburn fans is pretty low at the moment though. Whatever they say about Venkys, and however much Allardyce deserved to keep his job, it is an undeniable fact that Blackburn are in the Championship relegation zone because the fans drove Steve Kean out. Frankly I hope they stay there.
If City don't go up, and if Newcastle stay up, why don't we just merge with Newcastle, thus gaining Premier League status - and then play all our matches at, say, the KC, and call ourselves, er, Hull City? It's been done before.
Thames valley royals Reading / Oxford United Suggested BUT shot down by the supporters so it never happened
