A striker who can hold up play, score, take free kicks, win headers, and play pinpoint passes to fast players running beyond him? Nah, not the sort of thing England needs.
Obviously a striker who scores just 2 goals in a season for his club and trips over the ball when it is going too fast for him is much more useful.
I noticed that the commentator compared him with Holt again He's not really a striker in the traditional sense. Rodriguez was more in that role today. But his link-up play is second to none.
Lambert has no chance of an England call-up, no matter how well he plays. As for Danny Welbeck, he can play **** but still be a regular. Really beggars belief.
Wouldn't be so sure. The meandering performance in the qualifiers could lead England to do something truly desperate, like bringing the leading English scorer into the fold.
Crooks and Dublin's summary really bodes well for Rickie and Rooney playing together with those 2 switching England would oinly need another 9 decent players. lol
I wonder if they would work well together. In my opinion Rickie is at his best when he drops back or moves out to the wing to collect the ball as it shows he can do more in a game than score goals. He almost needs to be playing with a pacey player. Like Defoe, but not Defoe.
The repetitive selection of Ashley Young, Milner, Glen Johnson, Welbeck and Lescott is a continual source of amusement for me, I long since gave up on the national side and their dismal performances against sub standard sides (in comparison to themselves..) Also think that Parker, Smalling and Jones being included immediately after returning from injury was a bit of a joke, as none of them have hardly had good seasons. I would also argue that Lampard> Gerrard yet somehow Gerrard is idolised, they show 1/10 of his long passes, but never the 9/10 he misses by miles. Lampard/ Wilshere and Carrick should start in CM on form this season, i think. I guess there is a lot of pressure from above in the FA, as it has always seemed a bit of an exclusive club. No matter who the manager, they never choose players on form. This is why I now follow the Scottish national team!
Sadly the England team has been a joke for a while now. For the above reasons but also because the players who get picked don't seem to show any passion or pride for the honour of playing for their country any more. One of the most enjoyable things about watching Saints at the moment is seeing how much each player wants to win. This doesn't show in England teams.
