Gerrard: Fans entitled to criticise Ferdinand

England captain Steven Gerrard has refused to criticise the national team's travelling supporters who were heard abusing Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in the 8-0 thrashing of San Marino.

The anti-Ferdinand sentiment could be heard throughout the Olimpico di Serravalle, even reaching the ears of the English coaching staff, as the fall-out from his decision to pull out of the squad due to a "pre-planned training and medical programme" continues to overshadow the Three Lions' attempt to reach Brazil 2014.

And Ferdinand's trip to Doha to commentate on the game would not have eased the tension, with the 34-year-old criticising both the squad and its manager, Roy Hodgson.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's top-of-the-table World Cup qualifier clash against Montenegro, Gerrard said the English fans had every right to show their displeasure at the former England hero.

Has Rio Ferdinand upset you by not playing? If he had any ideas of playing for his country in the future, I think he may have blown it.

yes it has pissed me off what ferdinand has done, he said he wanted to play for england more than anything and was still open for selection after Hodgson picked Terry over him. He then gets the best phone call an English footballer can get and thats to play for England, he then says oh sorry but playing for England doesnt fit in with my "fitness schedule".

What a ****ing pathetic loser and I hope he never plays for England again!!!

It doesnt matter, its playing for England and he still said that he wanted to be picked. Hes treated his fellow England players and their fans with utter disrespect.

I'd be annoyed if I were Rio. On the losing side of picking between him and a racist but it's ok now Ferdinand because Terry has retired, come on in!....just don't make problems with Ashley. Like it's his responsibility to not cause problems, as if he he were the one to start them in the first place. I don't like Ferdinand but I don't think he deserves to be criticized for not wanting to play for England right now

wanting to play for England?, it was handed to him on a plate, hes just upset that Terry was picked over him (and rightly so on form at that time), this is just typical Ferdinand. Also Terry was never convicted of racism.

A lack of criminal conviction doesn't make him innocent, the FA punished him. He said it we all saw it.

Because he's his team mate. FA wouldn't of punished him if he didn't do it, like I said a lack of criminal conviction does not make you innocent law is not as black and white (excuse the pun) as that, and again it's on youtube for everyone to see. Your point was about Rio's behavior why are you trying to deny the truth about John Terry? It doesn't make your comments on Ferdinand very reliable.
Lets keep it to Ferdinand is he liable to the criticism? Valid points can be made on either side of the debate as you mentioned about being typical of him before, I can agree with you on that and it's also possible there is after all a reason I don't like him. It all depends on what is going on in his head. He's either being a child, under Fergie's thumb or is bitter over justifiable reasons.

he can never justify not playing for his country if asked, the problem is he should have said that he wouldnt play for england while Hodgson was in charge, or Terry in the squad, BUT he said that he still wanted to play for England, was asked, and the turned it down with a pathetic excuse (trying to be the big I am) and has made himself look a tool.

Then that is fine. My comment was in response to the poster who originally brought up the Terry incident. If that were the case I couldn't criticize him.
I don't know nearly enough about Hodgson's relationship with the England players as I pay very little attention to international football other than my own countries annual friendly. All I can go by is the reasons people more in the know think is most likely and unsurprisingly most of those reasons, Rio doesn't come off in a good light

To be honest international football is a very sore subject for me as I think that it should be the peak of a footballers career, however nowadays players seem to pick and choose (probably due to club manager pressure too) when to play. It really frustrates me as I think that there should be no greater honour. Thanks for the debate, its nice to see different perspectives.

    Best of luck to you

Ricc - Rio apart, that's another argument, in my opinion, an international cap should be the pinnacle of any footballer's career.
BUT, Once upon a time you had to EARN an England cap, nowadays they chuck them around like confetti. Meaningless international friendlies, change the entire team at half time = 22 caps against the might of the Faeroe Islands.

When you are a complete and utter thicko, on £150K per week, your club is going to come first, second, and third. I'm not say that Rio is one of those. I do tend to agree that he should not hold personal grudges though.

The whole Terry affair was handled extremely badly, what was it, nearly a year between offence and court case, the FA charge was completely different to the Civil/Criminal Law one. Oh and Rio calling Cole a Choc Ice is not provocative!!

Offensive to white people that Choc Ice comment imo. Like we'd all stick up for a racist because we are white so racist by default. :emoticon-0173-middl
