Gary Shandling was a very funny show as was Seinfeld. Both got crappy time slots in the uk hence didn't really take off.
Interesting views of comedy here. I agree with Espanacol that viewing the Irish at close hand can 'colour' the way you look at programmes, there are a few characters there that really remind me of people I know. It says a lot for the paucity of real quality comedy at present on TV, Frasier and Seinfeld were light years ahead of their time...
Really not for me...can't get it, findi it mildly offensive....but there again really can't get allo allo either....both leave me cold As a girl I really like Miranda.....Liking Big Bang theory
Sorry I couldn't watch Mrs Brown's Boys and I base that view just on the presentation, hype and livery. However I respect anyone that has a good laugh at anything as that is in fact a fundamental of a healthy life IMO. I have severe trouble with Mcintyre, Henry and Connelly all because their material is so very contrived. I know i am ill but this come from my youth when people would say you must watch Billy Connelly you will wet yourself ... trouble was I already had ... Same as people quoting Monty Python's sketch about the dead parrot saw it, and i didn't laugh. Four Candles is great once in a while but again it's been done Comedy gold: Barker, Cook, The Fast Show, Coogan, Vic and Bob, Frankie Boyle all tickle me Comedy affects us all in different ways as it should do
Comedy being broadcast in Britain (can't speak for Ireland I don't live there) is abysmal these days so even if you think it's crap it doesn't necessarily stop it from being the funniest on television. I grew up with my Grandpa showing me all the old British comedies. Morecambe and Wise, Two Ronnies, Dad's Army, Steptoe and Son,Only Fools, Blackadder, Father Ted,Open All Hours,Fawlty Towers ect ect and no wish to offend any Brits but I was really disappointed when coming to England with such high expectations and finding 'Miranda'
Am I the only person on the planet that doesn't like John Bishop?? Apparently Time Team have traced his act back to 1976!
Have difficulty understanding him in all honesty. But from what I can follow, I don't find him particularly funny no
I agree ... Bishop is useless in fact it would be a good exercise to name anyone who we would shoot live on Televeision: That Lemon Bloke Alan Carr John Ross Phil Jupiterus Noel and Russell I have respect for Keith Chegwin and Les Dennis as they sent themselves up Those stupid ****s Chubby Brown, Jim Davidson and Peter Kay George Doors even sold out Matt Lucas ... Little Britain only like Tom baker Any American Jimmy Tarbuck and any Dinosaur Anyone that tries too hard ... That idiot Mr Bean christ he has never made me laugh Rowan idiot useless black adder bloke is my pet hate
The trouble with a show like MBB is that the only comedic value to be derived, and it is rare enough, is from O Carroll himself. Mrs Brown is a good character and he can deliver well enough but the rest of the 'cast' are completely wooden and lack any interest whatsoever. Most of them are relations of his and if they weren't in the show would be on the dole. I particularly dislike the fawning sycophantic smirking on their part just before a 'great' joke is delivered by O Carroll, letting us know that we should be prepared for a big one which invariably falls short. It mocks the smirking we saw on shows such as Morecambe and Wise when in the execution of a particular routine the interaction between genuinely talented and funny characters often produced unscripted moments of great comedy. Each member of the Royle family, for example, were genuinely funny in their own right and didnt simply stand around as props for O Carroll's next contrived piece of humourless slapstick.
Titty Biscuits V Mrs Brown's Boys ... only one winner for me:
Comedy is so subjective isn't it? I can't stand Mortimer and Reeves and find them totally unfunny. I loved Bob Monkhouse, who in his live act was hilarious. We all find different things funny don't we. I don't usually like slapstick/silly comedy.........but I really liked 'allo 'allo ("Good moaning. The German bummurs will be dripping their bums over Lindon"). Morcambe and Wise were the kings for me and did you know that nearly all their apparent "ad libs" were in fact carefully rehearsed? My top list would be: Morcambe and Wise Tommy Cooper Bob Monkhouse Two Ronnies Fawlty Towers Only Fools and Horses Plus numerous others from both sides of the Atlantic.
Miranda seems to be a girl thing, all the women I know and employ love it. I just don't really get it. I like Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office/Extras and South Park.
How can you not get south park, its the funniest thing on TV and theyve got all the social commentary spot on apart from their opinion on smoking. Stuff like family guy is mind bogglingly bad, they just think up sketches and then force it into an ep which is not funny.
This made me chortle, the last one is especially funny though.
agree. there's the odd funny moment in Mrs Brown. it's well observed but compared to father ted it's just slightly embarrassing amateur dramatics.
no offence taken. i caught an episode of miranda while abroad and thought it was some show that we'd exported because it was too pants to show in england. imagine my horror that on returning home it was being heralded as the next great comedy. its utterly, utterly, utterly ****. But thats the british for you - can produce the greatest comedy in the world yet we regularly still embrace some of the most mediocre tat ever created.
