Just reading how Micheal Owen is going to set up a 'player management' business. Looks like he wants to continue taking big sums of money for doing precious little. ................ some things never change. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...company-retirement-protect-young-players.html Michael Owen is planning to launch a player agency business when he retires from professional football at the end of this season. Stoke City forward Owen, who has previously starred for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United announced on Tuesday that he will hang up his boots at the end of his season, bringing the curtain down on a difficult few years in which he has sustained several serious injuries that have chronically limited his game-time. In a blog on his personal website former England man Owen explained: 'On July 1, I propose to set up Michael Owen Management Ltd. focusing on guiding young players through their careers and offering them advice at every juncture of what can be a career full of pitfalls. The trading market for football players is worth more than $2billion a year, attracting agents hoping to profit from cutting deals. Owen said heâs entering the business after seeing 'so many horror stories' during his career and learning 'plenty from my own experiences.â Owen himself has valuable personal experience of the sudden fame that can be thrust upon footballers at a young age, having risen to prominence as 17-year-old at Liverpool, before gaining global recognition with a stunning goal against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup in France. And Englandâs fifth-highest goalscorer is desperate to provide a positive example and act as a mentor to these young talent. He continued: âI feel genuinely excited by the opportunity of guiding some of our best talent through their formative years and beyond.â âHaving already spoken with a number of people within the game, I get a real sense that they too feel that I can play an important role in helping to nurture talented youngsters into our stars of the future both on and off the pitch.â Owenâs post-retirement plans are beginning to look increasingly busy, with a few guest appearances on Match Of The Day this season set to be followed up by the striker signing a contract with the BBC to work on TV and radio from next season, as Sportsmail revealed earlier this week. Owen confirmed this in his blog: âI have appeared on various channels trying out different roles and gaining experience for a future on TV. âI am currently in discussions with several broadcasters and hoping to secure a contract for next season and beyond.â Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ment-protect-young-players.html#ixzz2OMHdA34Z Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook
Owen had four great seasons like most English players then he got found out scored one great goal against Argentina and has in effect been living off that ever since
Owen is one of the greatest goal scorers that England has ever had. If it wasn't for injuries, I believe he would have been THE greatest.
Owen up till his early 20s was a clinical finisher with exceptional pace, his injuries took that pace away from his game and he was never the same player after that, not dissimilar to Torres in that respect...
Pace and clinical finishing were his main assets, plus the ability to be in the right place at the right time. His goal scoring stats are amazing and he would have overtaken Charlton's goal scoring record with fewer injuries. He is a super confident, some would say big headed bloke and I don't think that has endeared him to people over the years.
he would never have got close to Jimmy Greaves' goals per game ratio - 44 goals, 57 caps. Owen definitely had huge talent, one of the many 'if only' careers.
I'd much rather an already wealthy ex-pro did this rather than the sleazy, profiteering, opportunistic leeches that currently operate. Owen is about as interesting as grass trimmings (with entire chapters of his many autobiographies dedicated to hamstrings) but I have nothing against him and wish he'd have stayed injury free.
Owen was a great poacher but he was nothing once he lost his pace which is why I am totally against signing old players that are/were pacy because they will lose that yard of pace and youre stuck paying 50k a week for a player whos worth 10% of that.
totally agree with this. he made his money and he see's an opportunity to make more money, good luck to him i say as we would all make money like him if we could.....he will have a long way to go to catch up with the master of making money out of football in Beckham....now that is what is called using his name and football.... and owen and loads more were better footballers than him in reality...fair play to them....
Why don't you **** off to your own board ? No doubt your one of the many Swansea runners who were quick on their toes round the back of the bok, next time give us a call first and we can meet discreetly. Toodle pip
Think he was a very, very good player for a period of time but his perceived attitude ( latter years ) was the opposite, however, I could be wrong.
