Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara has escaped serious injury following Callum McManaman's knee-high challenge during Sunday's clash with Wigan.

The club confirmed on Friday that the latest scan showed the injury is less severe than first feared, with bruising to the bone and soft tissue damage the extent.

Depending on the speed of recovery the defender could be fit as early as the beginning of April, with Newcastle's Europa League quarter-final at Benfica a possibility.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Massadio will continue to be assessed over the coming days. He has been very lucky that he has not suffered more serious injury.

"This positive diagnosis in no way lessens the club's views with regard to the severity of the tackle from which it resulted."

And Debuchy is also apparently not that far away from coming back.

Glad to hear it's not serious, but that doesn't mean that the FA were right to not punish Mcmanaman retrospectively.

Ahh I agree, this is nothing more than good fortune to be honest. The severity of the tackle could literally have ended his career, regardless of what any Wigan fan, employee or chairman will tell you.

    Quite Right!
Remember Coloccini's sending off against Liverpool, he never made contact, he pulled out of the tackle, it seemed to be all about intent and dangerous play, he was still red carded, so how can wild challenges that caused injury not be punished?

    This makes me :emoticon-0100-smile.

Not that I'm defending the FA. in fact quite the opposite, regarding McMananannaamanaamananm, they were doomed if they did, doomed if they didn't because of their haphazard make it up as you go along way of operating.

    very happy indeed.
Strip away all the emotion and it was always only about the player and his wellbeing.... so good to see that it isn't as bad as we first feared.

Pleased for the lad. The news on Debuchy and Cabaye makes happy reading too. Hopefully the players can make one big last push to see us safe and try to give Benfica some sort of game over the two legs.

This is great news. Really pleased for Haidara and the team. Even though we know justice hasn't been done, hopefully this means we can draw a line under it all now and leave the rest to karma.

They are moaning that people are still talking about it too much so they put their collective brain cells together and come up with the perfect solution - talk about it for 7 pages! You couldn't make it up!!

Really pleased if this means we'll see Haidara on the pitch in a Toon shirt again this season. Great news for the lad. I just hope it doesn't affect his confidence or long term playing ability.
