    Saw this in the Sun.
    A couple of points....

1- Death threats of ANY kind are sick and have no place in society - whoever it was needs to be arrested pronto
2- Everything Poll said was spot on IMHO
3- If you are in the public eye and go on Twitter.. you do so knowing there are nut jobs out there... personally I'd stay off Twitter...

MARK HALSEY is considering his refereeing future after being the subject of a death threat.

He was in charge of Wigan’s clash with Newcastle on Sunday and missed Callum McManaman’s horror challenge on Massadio Haidara after his view was blocked.

That led to him being attacked on Twitter and one threat left him shaken and unable to sleep on Sunday night.

Halsey was then ‘disgusted’ after former ref Graham Poll laid into him on radio yesterday morning.

A pal of Halsey said: “Mark was made aware of one particularly vile message asking for his address and claiming he deserved a death threat.

“Mark loves refereeing and is consistently one of the best in the game but after something like this he is left wondering whether it is all worth it.

“He didn’t even sleep on Sunday. Everyone can see that his view of the incident was blocked.

“Now he has had to hear about Graham Poll laying into him.”

Halsey, 51, is one of the most respected officials in the game and has battled back from cancer to return to refereeing.

Poll said: “I see some referees who try their very hardest to run around and I get very disappointed when I see someone who doesn’t do that.

“Mark used to be one of the fittest referees in the Premier League.

“He’s been through a tough time in his life. I just hope Mark looks at it and thinks ‘is it time? Is this a signal to go?’”

Referees are unable to publicly defend themselves but the pal said: “Mark has been left disgusted by the comments from Poll.

“This from a man who issued three yellow cards to the same player in the World Cup.”

It is not the first time Halsey has received a death threat.

Last season Newcastle’s Steven Taylor revealed how Halsey had told him about other such threats.

Dear God no Toon fan was happy after Sunday but this is just stupid and some fans need to get a grip.
I checked Twitter on Sunday and I couldnt believe some of the tweets but with some people it is like that on most match days.
Some people do not think before they write and some are just plain morons.

It's sad that there are such stupid, vile people in the world. Twitter etc empowers them to loadly broadcast their ignorance and hate, which is an unfortunate side effect of increasing connectivity. Regardless of Halsey's poor performance (so bad it warrants a review of his position) it's unforgivable behaviour and could come back to bite them with recent arrests and charges related to twitter comments.

Him considering his refereeing career is one thing, but death threats are just way overboard and totally uncalled for. Refereeing is admittedly no mean feat and the fans who send those threats ought to be ashamed of themselves. To make matters worse, it puts us Newcastle fans in a bad light...

Wake up, there's more meaning to life than this.

No need for this at all. I know we're all angry at what happened, but nobody deserves death threats for making a mistake reffing. Silly thing to do these days too as we all know by now where it will end up.

There's no place for a missed red card turning into death threats. The guy admitted he missed it - that's called being honest.

Only a complete tool would tweet bad stuff like that.

Come on, let the FA bring some justice.

As has been said, every club has its fair share of morons, and it's good to see that this has been roundly condemned by the vast majority of decent folk on here..

What a fecking prick. Just no need for it and hopefully they will be heavily punished. As for Poll, how he has the audacity to criticise any ref after his 3 yellows is beyond me. Look Halsey and co had a shocker on Sunday. **** happens. As fans we are always going to be livid in the moments after but in the cold light of day, you just accept these things happen, the ref doesn't make the mistakes on purpose and move on. Obviously if he constantly cocks up then it should be picked up by the review system.

Unbelievable! I really cannot believe it. Don't use Twitter so haven't seen the comments, but if somebody has done this they should be locked up somewhere. Madness.

Death threats are utterly pathetic and frankly don't even really deserve comment, I'm sure Halsey was more disturbed by professional pride than taking that stuff seriously.

Graham Poll's comments though for me were met with derision on TalkSport last night but I felt he had a point.
Personally the problem is with him saying this publicly and putting external pressure on Mark Halsey, but he's qualified to have a say WHEN he's asked honestly to give it.

For me Mark Halsey SHOULD himself ask that question because the problem has really hinged on this thing of it not being seen.
You have to investigate what the reasoning is for that if you want to stop SERIOUS injury incidents being missed again and try to limit that as much as humanly possible.

He raised an interesting point about the referee's position and his ability to get into a better area of the pitch – whether that is down to fitness or judgement.

If we wouldn't expect a 50+ year old player to keep up sufficiently with play to be effective, should we expect that of a referee?

"I didn't see it" is an excuse we'll never be able to deny a human referee, but it shouldn't become a definitive golden bullet that can be leaned on as an automatic way out.

Let's acknowledge their fallibility finally and use appropriate technology to take responsibility AWAY from them for their own good and the integrity of the game...

In fairness we are talking about the Sun here. This "pal", who is he? Sounds like a cop out for made up ****e. Is there a screen print of this death threat. As they say it's someone saying he deserves a death threat rather than him actually recieving one, but I still can't see any proof of this. Maybe someone can prove me wrong

While not in any way wanting to make light of a death threat which can only ever be viewed as a disgusting response to a sporting event, I did come across this quote from the F365 letters page. It isn't mine and I can't take credit for it, but it made me smile:

Whoever has threatened Mark Halsey is just enthusiastic. It was his debut tweet. He is not that kind of twitterer.
    Alex Stokoe, Newcastle upon Tyne

Kind of puts into perspective how stupid Roberto Martinez and Dave Whelan were with their comments.

Hope nobody is offended by making fun of what would be a stupid and unacceptable crime if it has happened.

This - you can't say anything on twitter these days without it being retweeted thousands of times in either support or condemnation...some top Toon twitter lads spent a good hour searching for these death threats and found nothing - the closest they came was a numpty who wished the cancer had finished him off (he was immediately retweeted and shown to be a numpty).

IF there have been death threats then its disgusting, but in an age where everything is logged and monitored, I find it surprising that's there no evidence!
