If only he had not been pushed so hard as a young player. 33 is a very young age to retire at these days. I guess he will work for the BBC now.
It's shame about Michael Owen. Can't forgive him for the way he left LFC but prior to that, he was a top class player. You only have to look at the goal he scored against Argentina on such a massive stage ... and he was only 18 at the time. He should have been England's all time leading scorer but form and injuries wouldn't allow it.
Owen was brilliant for us, we were spoilt with the likes of him, Fowler and Collymore in the mid-late 90's. One of the best players we had and the best young player we have seen in my lifetime. All these young lads we currently have are not anywhere near as capable of making the impact Owen did at 17. Agree with Jimmy, cant forgive him for how he left, but will always remember his face when he was a pundit in Istanbul. His career bombed after he left Madrid, but while he was with us he was awesome. Good luck
On you know where there is an Owen retiring thread, and you know who bangs on about Liverpool and Suarez
If Owen had stayed Rafa could have pushed for a title much sooner. Getting Torres was the catalyst for our title push under Rafa. Before Torres Rafa always struggled with strikers. He had Baros and Cisse and signed Morientes, Crouch, Fowler, Kuyt, Ballamy. Some played great but none scored the amount of goals between. They didnt even manage the needed amount of goals when combined. A striker collection of Owen, Baros, Cisse and then added Crouch could have been fantastic. ----------Dudek---------- -finnan-Carra-Hyypia-Riise- ------Alonso-Hamann------ ---Garcia-Gerrard-Kewell--- -----------Owen----------
Very much this Personally, I don't blame him for leaving Liverpool when he did as we were embarking on a new era and he obviously felt he couldn't stick around and wait three or four years to see how it turned out, especially with Real Madrid knocking at the door with the likes of Figo, Zidance and co in their squad at that time too. Nor do I blame him for joining Man Utd, as much as it hurts us Liverpool fans, it was his last chance to win a league title medal in England. He didn't have to join Newcastle for 'more money' when leaving Real Madrid though. What really irritates me about him was his glaringly obvious preference of playing for England over Liverpool. He then moaned that he wasn't loved in the same way that Fowler, Gerrard, Carragher and McManaman were/are. All these things put together presents a dislike for the man. I will always be thankful for what he gave us but...
