It was definately a handball. Slo mo shows it coming off his chest and hitting his left arm. No denying it. Just a ridiculous thing to do when the only guy near him couldn't interfere as he was off-side when the ball was played forward anyway. grrrrrr
In which case you can argue that the off-side player has influenced play, so it should be a Norwich free-kick for the off-side, as that incident occurred first. Sorry, I'm just incensed at the moment.
Just to clarify my thoughts, Bunn's red was 100% correct, he didn't need to use his arm to stop it, but he did, so the rules are he has to go. But Bassong penalty incident was farcical, hit his chest an bounced to his hand, nothing he could do about it. I don't think anyone could produce a reasonable argument against the red or for the penalty.
Bunn's arms were up in an unnatural position...the ball struck his arm (yes it did), that, by the rules of the game is a deliberate handball...
It would be a pretty lame argument. The offside lad was on the ground and then got up and started jogging away from goal. He made no attempt to intluence play. Bassong was at fault, no complaints from me towards the officials. Just a stupid thing to do. Bassong could have just let the ball roll out for a goal kick.
It was a poor header by Turner which forced Bunn to come out to try and clear it, for me it didn't hit his arms so no it's not 100% sending off. Bassong it comes off his chest and it rolls onto his arm, so that wasn't deliberate. I understand the ref only has one chance to make a decision, but so far they've been shocking.
Shame we've self destructed really because Sunderland are a very poor side just putting the effort in. I wouldn't be surprised if we shut them out second half.
My stream has gone completely, but it sounds as if we will do very well to get a point out of this. Please please please Newcastle, stuff Wigan.
Well a lot of us said we'd settle for a point before the game, if we get that now I'll be very, very happy.
CH needs to get them in and calm them all down, we've not lost it yet but we will if they don't try to forget those TWO shocking descions. I just hope the officals are consistant with both teams this half. Surely can't be any more crap calls this half, can there?
Look, lets forget this 'deliberate' discussion. It is irrelavent. Handball is handball. If it had been deliberate then it would have also been a booking. The only time a player gets away with a handball that has been spotted is if the ball is struck at them at speed from close-range. In this instance, the accidental handball was the result of poor control from Bassong.
The only poor decision in this match from the officials was Bunns dismissal. He did not deliberately handle and so it should simply have been a free-kick.
Yup, Turner has to take a large chunk of blame for his role in the sending off, terrible back pass. Bassong could have let it go but it could also have been dangerous to do so as a Sunderland player was just behind him. Just seen some slow-mo replays and both decisions were probably right but both very frustrating. A point will be an excellent result from this and I for one will give no flack toward the display this week, it was much better for the first 30 minutes and the rest of the game is no more than a lottery now.
pretty sure thats not the case Quoting Fifa's Laws of the Game 2005, Law 12 'A free-kick or penalty will be awarded if a player "handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)". "Referees are reminded that deliberately handling the ball is normally punished only by a direct free-kick or penalty kick if the offence occurred inside the penalty area. A caution or dismissal is not normally required."
