We're miles off that standard. Even Portugal.

Have to disagree that we're miles off that standard. If you compare England's best'ish XI to Germany's there, man for man, there's not a lot in it.

Neuer - Hart: Not a lot in it.
Boateng - Walker: Boateng edges it.
    Hummels - Cahill: Hummels.
Badstuber - Terry: I'd say Terry is still the better player.
Lahm - Cole: Cole is still the best LB in the world.
Khedira - Parker: Very different players but I don't really rate Khedira.
Schweinsteiger - Gerrard: Not a lot in it but I'd say Gerrard was the more classy player.
Kroos - Walcott: Not seen a lot of Kroos but he's supposed to be decent.
Podolski - Lennon: Lennon, Podolski is vastly overrated as has been proved at Arsenal.
Ozil - Wilshere: Honestly don't think there's a lot in it, by 2014 Wilshere should be a world class player.
Gomez - Rooney: Gomez hasn't impressed me greatly, despite a good record, but then again, Rooney under performs for England, I would say he was the better player though.

So, really, I don't see a fat lot in it. Right now, there's Spain and then the rest of the world fairly far behind, we're just in that mix. In terms of players that is, as a team we have looked very poor in every game in a major competition for about 10 years now.

Rooney's been **** for Man United for two years, and England for nine.

Also, anybody who dresses their son in a ROI kit and posts pictures of it online clearly isn't very English.

You really think Rooney was **** for Man United last season? He scored 34 goals, 27 in the league, I'd say that was fairly good going. Even this season he has a better than 1 in 2 record in both league & all competition despite being played basically in midfield to accommodate RVP for large parts of the season.

I'm afraid you're wrong. This 'overrated' tag is largely because the British press built him up so massively so they could shoot him down again. The fact is, the lads been consistently very good for Man United showing himself to be one of the best players in England, and really, the world.

It is true that he's never performed to his Man United standard for England in the really big games since probably 2004 though. Doesn't make him a **** **** though.

Rooney is 'overrated' because the press think he's supposed to be the white Pele.

He's still a wonderfully gifted footballer and has it all IMO.

He's our best player, on paper, by a ****ing mile. Just as soon as he pulls on the England shirt he becomes the white Carton Cole.

I think there's a real issue, i've said it many times, in england more so than the other countries.

When rooney is in the squad, half the nation bitches about him and hates england because they are scouse, man city fans or londoners...
Same with john terry, lampard etc...

There isn't as much animosity in other countries. The german squad is basically bayern and dortmund with a couple madrid players... I don't think the Hamburg or Hannover fans bitch as much about that fact as we would.

You can argue your case if you think your team's player deserves a spot but I think most nations "know" what their best team is.
I don't think Milan fans bitch about Juve's keeper being Number 1, they can all accept that buffon is the best.

Every ****ing time Hodgson or anyone makes a selection it is contested and argued and bitched about and it's all down to club rivalry.

Circa, that argument would wash if Spain's squad wasn't made up largely of Madrid and Barcelona players.

    Spain is similar to this.

They're mainly Madrid and Barca and when they play each other domestically they rarely avoid red cards and broken legs.

But when they play for Spain they love each other.

Not being a lower league player punching above his weight would help

IMO, Hodgson should play a shadow team against San Marino. Interesting that Lescott has been overlooked.

You are aware the Dutch fall apart every tournament.

Spain used to do the same, until they suddenly became the "be all and end all" of football.

Both due to the massive domestic divisions of their squads.

Rooney doesn't deserve all the grief he gets from the English Media. He plays better than most in that team.

When we talk of replacing Rooney with the likes of Ricky bleedin Lambert or Nugent then we're really scrapping the barrell.
