The FA have just announced the England squads for forthcoming fixtures.

Shaw and Clyne both called up for the U21 games against Romania and Austria.

But the big news is Rio Ferdinand has been recalled by Roy Hodgson.

    GOALKEEPERS: Hart, Forster, Foster.

DEFENDERS: Baines, Cahill, Cole, Dawson, Ferdinand, Smalling, Johnson, Walker.

MIDFIELDERS: Carrick, Cleverley, Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Osman, Parker, Lennon, Chamberlain, Young.

FORWARDS: Defoe, Walcott, Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck.

    Thoughts?

I'm not one much for conspiracy theories, but isn't that Ferdinand recall a coincidence?

Well I think it's fair to say that the England selection process...whatever that is, clearly doesn't take into account form.

Also, Ferdinand is a dinosaur. I really don't like him or his face.

Hodgson just said on Sky his squad is picked on form and merit. And those picked are those in form and who deserve to be there.

I'm aware that we don't have much choice. But Defoe has been in terrible form for ages. Chamberlain has barely played, and when he has, has looked poor. I can't remember the last time I saw Young play well. Walcott is going through a slow patch, same with Rooney. There are others too I just can't be arsed to go through the whole list.

I realise though, that you can't dismantle the entire squad midway through the qualifiers. There's a few that you could swap around. But I would never say that squad is picked based on form. It's picked because we haven't got much choice and some of those players have been proven at high standards in the past.

To be fair a Saints not606 board XI could see off San Marino.

The senior England team is a joke, thought things would change under Roy but obviously not.

On the plus side, that U21 squad looks very strong indeed.

I've got some United fan having a go at me elsewhere for my comments about England being uninspiring and disagreeing over Rio's inclusion.

"You support Saints so who are you to comment on Rio?" - cracking argument.

Strong enough that, if not for the fact of out-and-out goal-scorers, I'd give them fairly good odds against the senior squad. Caulker and Ince in particular ought to be with the senior team on merit.

If you include U21 players in the senior squad you would also have Walker, Wilshire(if he wasn't injured), Welbeck and Chamberlain. Ferdinand would definitely have a bad day.

Engalnd squad, hmm...hardly building for the future. A handfull of new-ish members, fine, but plenty of old guard who never worked wonders before and are hardly likely to do so now.

England U21 squad - not too shabby, but please let's keep them together, get them used to winning (hopefully) and then promote them to the full squad as a group (those that are ready), not one by one so they can pick up the bad habits of the seasoned first team underperformers.

We don't really have many good centre backs but Young 's selection amazes me, but then I really don't rate him.
