Scarborough Athletic have captured former Premier League midfielder Bryan Hughes.

The 36-year-old ex-Birmingham, Wolves, Charlton Athletic and Hull City man has joined until the end of his season, though Hughes’ ultimate aim is to propel himself back into the Football League.

He played 21 games for Accrington Stanley last season and won league two player of the month for December during that spell. Also in 2011 he turned out in Europe for Norweigen side IBV, though they slipped to a two-legged defeat against Irish side St Patrick’s.

Hughes will slot straight into the squad for Boro’s home derby game against Pickering Town on Saturday afternoon.

Boro boss Rudy Funk was over the moon with a signing that he has dedicated to the fans.

He said: “Bryan is an exceptional player and an exceptional talent.“This is our biggest signing this season and it is one for the fans. Our supporters have been amazing this season and I just hope they enjoy watching a player of his calibre turning out in our side.

“He spent last year at Accrington and he has been keeping himself extremely fit because him main aim is to get back playing in the Football League. “We have been talking to Bryan for a while. Originally we wanted him as cover earlier in the season, but now he is with us to the end of the campaign with hopes of helping us towards our ultimate aim.

“I’m very excited about this signing, not only as a manager, but as a fan of the club. He will be a great addition to our team.”

He wants to propel himself into the football league? At 36, he probably should have picked a club higher up the football league pyramid.

Also, IBV are from Iceland, it stands for Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja. They have Hermann Hreiðarsson as a player manager, where he is something of a club hero (bit like Barmby for us).
