Scarborough Athletic have captured former Premier League midfielder Bryan Hughes. The 36-year-old ex-Birmingham, Wolves, Charlton Athletic and Hull City man has joined until the end of his season, though Hughesâ ultimate aim is to propel himself back into the Football League. He played 21 games for Accrington Stanley last season and won league two player of the month for December during that spell. Also in 2011 he turned out in Europe for Norweigen side IBV, though they slipped to a two-legged defeat against Irish side St Patrickâs. Hughes will slot straight into the squad for Boroâs home derby game against Pickering Town on Saturday afternoon. Boro boss Rudy Funk was over the moon with a signing that he has dedicated to the fans. He said: âBryan is an exceptional player and an exceptional talent.âThis is our biggest signing this season and it is one for the fans. Our supporters have been amazing this season and I just hope they enjoy watching a player of his calibre turning out in our side. âHe spent last year at Accrington and he has been keeping himself extremely fit because him main aim is to get back playing in the Football League. âWe have been talking to Bryan for a while. He wants to propel himself into the football league? At 36, he probably should have picked a club higher up the football league pyramid. Also, IBV are from Iceland, it stands for Ãþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja. They have Hermann Hreiðarsson as a player manager, where he is something of a club hero (bit like Barmby for us).
