Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini could be out of action for up to seven weeks after breaking two bones in his back.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury after landing awkwardly following an overhead clearance during his side's 4-2 Premier League victory over Southampton in February.

Coloccini has been allowed to return to his native Argentina for a week to work with his national association's medical team but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has reconciled himself to being without the defender for a significant length of time.

The manager said: "Colo has gone back to Argentina. There's no treatment he can have - he's broken two of the bones in his back. We think it's going to be anything between three and seven weeks. He's gone back for a week."

In January, Coloccini stated his desire to leave Newcastle and return to his homeland for personal reasons, but ended up remaining at St James' Park.

Pardew has defensive cover in January signing Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa but Coloccini's injury remains a blow to the Magpies, who are still looking to put a healthy distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

Yanga-Mbiwa is likely to start alongside Steven Taylor in Thursday's Europa League last-16 first-leg game with Anzhi Makhachkala at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Not good news, hope he recovers well and no permanent damage is done.

Breaking your vertebrae is not that big a deal in itiself as long as there is no nerve involvement. They wouldn't be letting him on long haul flights if there was nerve involvement.

Sounds dramatic, but probably not really worse than a hamstring.

    Thank god we bought Mbiwa

Serious post. Massive blow for you lot. our problem this season (not that most of my lot even see this problem as they're one dimensional thinkers and instantly blame formation for everything.) is weak defence which has ment playing deeper to protect it stunting our attacking capabilities considerably.

You are going to struggle defensivly for the next couple of months without Colo. and it's really tricky finding the right balance between defence and attack to pick up the points you need.

Convenient little period for him to pop off home and sort his personal problems... Or is that just me being unnecessarily conspiratorial?

Against Stoke we need better defending. Santon and Debuchy must not bomb on as much as they have been doing because their main role should be helping out a CB pairing with little game-time together. I'm not saying no bombing on, just more sensible application. They tend to go together for no apparent reason!

Mbiwa's not a bad player, but I don't rate him as an outstanding purchase as yet, or even necessarily a good one, whereas others have come in and looked at home straight away. Still, CB's usually take a bit of time to adjust.

Rofl, I always love the desperation around Mackem posts, you always try to find solace in your despair by trying to point out how we could possibly struggle.

Our defence is not broken without Coloccini, we have played well without him and can continue to do so. Mbiwa looks fantastic and can do a job.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but having Coloccini out hasn't spoiled our season.

    LOL.

If we didn't have Mbiwa, I'd be worried, but we do have him. Plus we have a couple of reliable back ups.

Not worried, and I believe we will finish strongly, depending on how successful our Europa League campaign is.

That's him pretty much out for the season... Cue a long trip to Argentina.
    Mbiwa will do really well.

Does seem rather convenient that he can go to Argentina. Hope he has a speedy recovery, but a lay off until May might mean we never see him in a Toon shirt again.

Tell you what, the club must be going a storm at 'injury bingo' this season...

Broken back??? How many times have you heard a player being layed off with that? Wow, if there's an injury then we'll find it folks.

By my reckoning we're only a Thwaxed Medulla and Quirtled Eardrum away from a full house. A trophy at last!!! :D

    Yes, incredibly convenient.

And isn't it odd that it took the best part of a fortnight to find out he had broken bones? I'm just an ordinary little nobody, but I would have an X-ray immediately if had a back injury. Wouldn't you think the club would organise an X-ray for their captain who's worth millions of pounds to them? There's something very odd about the The Tale of Colo's Very Slight Injury -- with a surprise ending.

    Timeline

February 24th: Injury sustained, apparently slight.

February 26th: Pardew said of Coloccini: “It’s not that bad. I just told him not to try those overhead kicks at his age. I think that he’ll be OK.”

February 28th: Coloccini is doubtful for Newcastle’s trip to Swansea. “I think he is doubtful but there’s a chance he could play.”

March 4th. Good News On Fabricio Coloccini -- The Newcastle manager had already said it would be unwise to play Colo on Thursday night when the side will be playing on an artificial Astro Turf pitch, but it looks like he could be ready for next Sunday, when we must take all 3 points from Stoke City.

And then amazingly, on March 7th, eleven days after the injury, he suddenly has what is being reported in some places as a “broken back”!

He has returned to Argentina to work with “his national association's medical team”???
What a pity you guys in Britain don’t have any doctors. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

Remember when old Osvaldo said Colo was looking for an “elegant” way to leave Newcastle? Looks like he found it.

Ive got a sore finger<wah>, does it mean I'll have to go all the way to Argentina to have it looked at because we don't have any doctors here?

It is hard to believe that Colo has broken a bone in his back after a fall onto grass ...

IMO he's been given a few days away with his family as a goodwill gesture.
