Mike Williamson has taken a back seat following the arrival of the French Connection, but Alan Pardew says he is still in his thoughts.

The defender has been put out in the cold, due to the arrival of signing Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Steven Taylor''s return from injury ... and it must be a kick in the nuts for him hearing Pardew tell the media "we’ve got good players now".

Williamson did not travel to the Ukraine for Newcastle’s last Europa League tie, but he is in Russia.

However, the 29-year-old is not expected to start against Anzhi Makhachkala, even with captain Fabricio Coloccini absent through injury.

Yanga-Mbiwa, signed from Montpellier in last month’s transfer window, is likely to continue in the heart of Newcastle’s defence with Taylor.

Alan Pardew: “Mike hasn’t disappeared – but we’ve got good players.

“Willo’s training well, and he’s in the background if I need him. With Stoke coming up, I might well need him.”

Williamson’s last appearance came in the 2-1 home defeat to Reading on January 19.

There you go all, your anxiously anticipated news on the whereabouts of one of our most important defenders Willo.

Great to hear that Pardew might need him against Stoke

Lol yea... But I can't believe Pardew had said that with Stoke coming up I might need him.

The dude training well is one thing, like I can train well for all I want, but I should never see the field for NUFC for the same reason Willo shouldn't.

There is still a chance Pardew is only saying this to keep all the players on their toes and to motivate all the players to keep it going.

But still I'd rather never see Willo on the teamsheet again if we could help it lol
