You've just contradicted yourself mate. By the book, reckless play is punishable by a yellow card. Serious foul play is punishable by red card. By the book, serious foul play occurs when a player "far exceeded the necessary use of force". Are you seriously claiming Nani far exceeded the necessary use of force by jumping in the air trying to control the ball?

For Gandalf's examples, that's why a two footed stud lunge, or for that matter a one footed lunge as the rules do not distinguish, is a red card - it far exceeds the necessary use of force needed to win a ball on the floor, and there is a clear risk of injuring anyone who might get in the way as their leg would be pinned against the ground. Can you explain to me how you think Nani could possibly have made that challenge with less force?

El Pirata has a good point, although that depends on whether you think Nani extended his leg to try and kick at Arbeloa or simply to try and keep his balance and avoid landing badly. Personally I'd assume the latter, given he didn't know Arbeloa was coming, but given Nani's past petulance it's possible he gave a cheeky kick, or the ref interpreted it that way.

At least you managed to get some form of enjoyment from a Manchester club in Europe this year then. <whistle>

we went down to ten men v Barca last season and turned round a 2-0 deficit.

You can't give up if you go down to ten men and blame the ref. Just suck it up and win the tie

Don't think it could be anything other than a red, It was dangerous, reckless and using excessive force.
Man United had a large amount go their way over the two legs as well mind.

Fergusons reaction has been pathetic though, many managers do their interviews despite refereeing decisions going against them.

what ever happened to Madrid teaching us a footballing lession???? we had lost 10-0 even before a ball had been kicked, But yet it turns out it had to take a really shocking reffing decision to beat us and shocking reffin over both legs

There is actually a defence to Rafaels hand ball?

He had his arm in an unnatural position, intent or not it is a penalty, minimum.

Missed the GK challenge on Vidic, but if it was as dangerous as people are saying, definite red as well.

is just unenviable the piece of crap i've been hearing since yesterday ..
the red card was a game changer ..
no other decision even can get close to it
I rather we were 2-0 down and had 11 men to have a chance

If it isn't a foul why Nani grabs his stomach like he's the one that was kicked. One word: Cheater
