I've noticed recently that the culture of making threads about an external link without copying and pasting the text from it has crept back in. Without meaning to sound bossy, please take a minute to copy and paste here the text from your interesting articles as not all of us are able to visit those links or it can be an effort to visit them without the best Internet or device to do so!

    Thank you! :)

But then the author doesn't get the hits his piece deserves...

This is the point, it's fairer to just provide the link so the author gets the hit, people on qpr report have been abusing this for years. :undecided:

    Too damn right Watford.

I've had a go at both Norway and Nines about doing this recently. Fortunately both are mates of mine and we will all have a laugh about it on Saturday.

Maybe we need to reach a compromise here. If it is a piece by a blogger, like TIME or on a QPR site such as LFW then post a link, if the article is in an newspaper or non-QPR site, do what you like?

It does annoy me when I see my work copied and pasted elsewhere; as I said to Nines, I'm shallow enough to enjoy seeing the hits on my blog stack up.

And for the less technically adept among us, Roller (and I'm one), may be some instructions on our board somewhere on how to post a link. I admit to cutting and pasting through ignorance...

Right click on the link in the address bar , copy it & then paste in the reply box.
But IMO, this only applies to other QPR sites/blogs, anything else is there to be ripped off (I'm sure soccer boy will be on to disagree!)

Compromise, best of both worlds - provide the url + copy/paste text to message, although sometimes you do lose some of the formatting.

While I appreciate that you are trying to find the middle ground, this doesn't work. If the article is copied and pasted in its entirety no one is going to click on the link, and no hit will be recorded for the blogger.

I certainly appreciate your comment regarding blog extracts - generally my links are off BBC Sports etc.

2bqh if the story isn't copy and pasted on here I don't generally go looking for it so the author wont get any hits anyway

    Exactly!

I’m 100% with awjm on this one, the whole plagiarism/due credit angle has been totally overstated here IMO.

The beauty of this board for me is that it’s a one-stop shop for all things QPR. If I want to wade through a hundred different outside websites for the briefest mention of anything to do with QPR, what with all with their own ads and cookies and pop-ups, then I can do that. That’s what Google is for, I don’t need someone to post a link.

As far as I’m concerned, if something’s posted on the internet that relates to my club, and it isn’t behind a pay-wall, then it’s fair game. That whole freedom of information is the lifeblood of the internet. Otherwise, there does it stop? If someone starts talking about a piece from Sky Sports News am I supposed to not read it unless I get out a satellite subscription?

The cream rises to the top. If an article is well written, or comes from someone with reliable sources, then my interest will the pricked and I’ll want to read further at the writers home internet domain. For example, I now regularly visit the West London Sport website, having first seen several good articles copied and pasted from it to this board. To be honest, most QPR related articles taken from the web I would almost certainly have never seen at all had they not been posted, in full, on this board.

I guess this very much depends upon which side of the fence you sit. You are right in saying that once an article is posted on the internet it is fair game, and I know that there is nothing anyone can practically do about preventing it being copied and pasted, but maybe you will consider this?

I’m just finishing an article on a Q.P.R. legend. I will be uploading it to my blog next week and posting a link on Not606 as well as other Q.P.R. forums. I’ve been working on this article, on and off, for probably 2 months. While I write because I enjoy it, I have put a lot of effort into this article and I don’t feel it is too much to ask that I am allowed a small level of return in seeing the hits on my blog stack up. If you are prepared to extend that courtesy to me I would ask that you do so to all bloggers.

But that is just me (and all fellow bloggers) on an personal satisfaction level, web sites such as the excellent West London Sport exist due to advertising. They need as many people as possible to go to their website to ensure they keep their advertisers. If their articles are copied and pasted and no one visits their website they will go out of business. I think it is important that we all play our part in ensuring that the plethora of good quality independent websites continue to exist giving us a far wider range of thoughts and opinions. Stick to the links please.

Give the URL if its a decent site or a QPR site but C&P if its from the Fail, Scum or Mirror as they dont deserve the hits.

Fair point Roller. I always love reading your stuff, with your absolutely brilliant “This World of Rs” from the end of last season being my particular all time favourite. Your passion for the Hoops seeps out of every word you so eloquently write, and for this reason I am always sure to pop onto your Wordpress site to read what you have to say.

To be honest though, 90% of the articles which appear on here aren’t like that at all. They tend to come either the QPR Official press team, or worse still from payrolled newspaper hacks, rather than from unpaid bloggers. I don’t feel any such compulsion to read these kind of pieces from the original webpage, and if I had to do that, (i.e. if just a link was posted rather than the article text) then I simply wouldn’t bother.
