My very earliest memory of Oxford was at the Manor Ground, back in 1983-84. The reason this particular game stuck in my memory, was because that season Oxford went on to win the old Division Three title and had been unbeaten at home up until our visit. I think it was an evening game when we visited. Oxford completely dominating the game after the Gills snatched an early goal, the Gills defence took a complete battering, I eventually saw us bring home all three points and inflict Oxford’s only home defeat of the entire season. So 28 years on... and the Us started the game two points above the Gills in the League Two table, both pushing to be 2011/12 promotion contenders. Oxford put the Gills under a lot of pressure in the first half and a particular player that stood out for me was their number 15 Alfie Potter, seemed very quick and a bit of a handful for the Gillingham players. Joe Martin picks up a yellow card on 18 minutes for unsporting behaviour, seemed a bit harsh to me at the time and was to prove more costly later in the game. However, probably against overall possession, the Gills were to score a vital goal just before half time, when the ball came back out of the Oxford box and fell to the feet of Lewis Montrose, everyone appeared to be screaming ‘just hit it’, to witness the ball then be smashed in to the back of the net. So the second half was to continue much the same way as the first half , with Oxford in possession, although the Gills did have their fair portion of attacks as well, with Jo Kuffour providing some excellent attacking runs on the Oxford area, in which he was to be eventually awarded the man of the match for his efforts. Not taking anything away from Jo Kuffour, my own selection would have been Ross Flitney after some superb goal keeping and unbelievable saves, I guess Oxford must have been thinking what have we to do to beat this guy. Two disappointments of the game, first the referee, six yellow cards (Oxford) and two reds (Gills), in my opinion the referee wanted to be the star of this show, so the Rainham End were not going to let him go home disappointed in his search for stardom! The second disappointment was the Oxford number 30 Robert Hall, appeared from where I was sitting to be tripping over his own feet, I will leave it at that. A good job for Oxford that Luke Rooney never suffered the same problem when he was in the Oxford penalty area in the second half! So 559 Yellows went home disappointed but the other 5,000+ Blues made Priestfield ROCK! I have completely lost my voice but worth every bit of it for the effort put in by Hessy's team today. GeminiSwift - you have stated that Gills will score 120 goals - but have not listed sufficient names & numbers of scorers. <well I wasn't the one to introduce silliness into the thread>
I don't think we'd have to be thinking about Goal Difference if we score 120. That's a goal every 45 seconds or so (Depending on injury time of course). I think the good old Vidiprinter might struggle to keep up.
