If you are willing to travel a bit, there is a folly called Forbidden Corner. Its a fiary tale type thing, its class. 4 and 8 year olds would really love it.

Durham Botanic gardens they have beetles and creepy crawlees which kids love. Also there's a blue cone tree it's not the right name but kids love trying to find it.

I've been, it's quite a size, has a small Aviary there, and a boating lake.
It does have lots of places to picnic, as well as a small café, but I like it because there is an allocated area where dogs are permitted off the lead, even as a dog owner, I shudder when I see dogs off the lead around kids.

Some of the places I liked to go when younger, Finchale Abbey, Witton Castle, Bowes Museum, Holy Island, Hadrians wall!

Alnwick gardens is a great day out - just park your arse on the grass in front of the fountains and let your kids run wild - they'll have a ball!

The Discovery museum in Newcastle is great and is free - can easily combine this with the Hancock and a trip to Chinatown for a meal. - lovely.

Wallington hall in Northumberland - lovely house - a great play area in the woods and there is a bird watch in the woods - the last time I was there with the kids we saw a woodpecker, a mouse and a red Squirrel. The walled gardens are great also - loads for the kids to explore.

Gibside - not too far away from you - go on a day when there is activities and the kids will have a ball - we've been when there was mouse house building on - great fun.

Bamburgh is superb - no need to go in the castle - just make your way to the wonderful beach and you'll be set for the day.

If you want to head south Sands End and Whitby is a great day out.

    Cragside - great day out.

Adventure Valley in Durham - fab day out - great fun for the adulds also :)

I live in Crook - head west from me up Weardale - Stanhope has an outdoor pool, a lovely play area and a river that in the right conditions is great for catching fish.

    Have fun!

Following A.C.S. 08.31 post this morning asking about castles along the coast I tried to post a helpful reply detailing my own recommendations. When I pressed the"post quick reply" a message appeared saying something to the effect that the mods. needed to check it was OK.This was about 12.30 today(25th).Nothing contentious,no bad language just helpful advice. What appears - NOTHING.not even the courtesy of a note from the mods. to say why it had not been posted.Out of 11 attempted posts two have now failed.(The earlier one was also non-contentious).Cannot accept that "failure" rate with no explaination so although I will continue to read the forum will not waste any more time trying to post.Wonder how many others no longer waste their time!!
    Controlled rant over.

Just found out they don't open yet for about a month. Even so, get it in your diary- with a sharpie and not a pencil.

I've no idea. Haven't seen anything come through to my inbox. Is it because a newbies first few posts are checked in some way (like old BBC606)? Even then, I've nit seen anything to take a look at. All looks fine to me. <ok>
