It might seem very foggy at the Milan derby, but it's just the smoke from flares! How they can play in all that smoke, I don't know.

I'm watching PSG v Marseille, currently 1-0 (early deflected goal). Barton having a very solid game. Beckham has come on for last 15 mins. Gignac has missed a handful of chances to score for Marseille.

Must be a latin thing then? In my opinion, that sort of behaviour should be banned, it is idiotic - very dangerous for anyone in proximity to those flares. With Bradford playing in the League Cup Final today, I thought of that tragic fire at their old stadium in 1985, likely started by a cigarette butt igniting trash under a wooden grandstand.

I understand people's concerns and of course witnessing things like that those concerns are completely justified but we are yet to do any harm and it's part of our culture I can't see anything being done about it unless there was a big tragedy.
Never use flares myself as I am often with my younger brother and worry about injuring him but I won't deny I do enjoy the flares. I'm proud to be part of the ultras of our club and we're often the nutcases who have the flares, I often hear British people complaining about the lack of atmosphere in British football compared to the old days and after attending both Spanish matches and English matches the difference in fan atmosphere is obvious. A lot of blame is pinned on the removal of standing terraces. I think that is a point, does removing parts of fan culture in football eventually lead to a decline in atmosphere?

I worked with a Lincoln fan a few years ago that went to the Bradford fire game
One of those moments that will be stuck on his mind until he dies

Must have been an absolutely awful day. Brings life to a stark reality. Bradford had been awarded the 3rd Division championship trophy before this game. Don't have any sympathy for these so called "ultras" setting off their damn flares.

Portraying people who use flares as villains is very ignorant. They do not intend on hurting anybody, ultras are not violent thugs, accidents with flares are exactly that accidents.

I was a steward at Loftus Road at the time, after the tragedy we had to do a fire fighting course, part of the course involved watching the video of it unfolding from start to finish. I'll never forget the things I saw on that video parts of it were never broadcast on TV. Since that day I've had a soft spot for Bradford knowing what those people went through.
I hope no-one ever has to go through anything like that again

I was at QPR the day it happened.
I remember walking to Shepherds Bush underground after the game and stopping at a TV shop and just watching in disbelief through the window
There must of been about 50 of us piled up outside this shop

The Bradford fire was an obviously avoidable tragedy, but nothing to do with flares. I'm with Cristofol on this one, flares have been used for ages in Europe, very rare incidents with them and never a stadium fire. They really add to atmosphere, especially at night games. Not sure I would trust English fans with them though.

I asked Nines about fire risks at LR on here ages ago. If I recall rightly he said the preponderance of concrete in the stadium makes it pretty low. Personally I would be more worried about crushing at the entrance to the Upper Loft - very crowded for the ten minutes before kick off and a horrible funnel. Only takes one person to start pushing and shoving and it could turn very ugly.
