Newcastle United V Southampton

Sunday 24th February 2013

Kick off 1.30pm @ SJP

Squad
Vuckic, Raylor are long term absentees and HBA looks likely to make the subs bench at best. After sitting out the Metalist ties, Mathieu Debuchy is available and it is hoped that the Gouff will have recovered fron his Spurs injury.
More worrying is the prospect of no Tim Krul after he left the Metalist Stadium last night on crutches after his heroics.... more to follow on this one I'm sure.

ACS's View
I don't want to sound complacent of cocky but in our current form we should be more than a match for the Saints. I'm expecting a hell of a performance and a 3-1 scoreline.

Previous Saints visits to SJP
2005/06: Won 1-0 Dyer (FAC)
2004/05: Won 2-1 Shearer (pen), Bramble
2003/04: Won 1-0 Shearer
2002/03: Won 2-1 Sh.Ameobi, Hughes
2001/02: Won 3-1 Robert, Shearer 2 (1 pen)
2000/01: Drew 1-1 Gallacher
1999/00: Won 5-0 Ferguson 2, Solano, Dabizas, OG
1998/99: Won 4-0 Shearer 2 (1 pen), Ketsbaia, OG
1997/98: Won 2-1 Barnes 2
1996/97: Lost 0-1
1995/96: Won 1-0 Lee
1994/95: Won 5-1 Watson 2, Cole 2, Lee
1993/94: Lost 1-2 Cole
1988/89: Drew 3-3 O'Neill 2, Brock
1987/88: Won 2-1 Goddard, Mirandinha
1986/87: Won 2-0 Goddard, Gascoigne
1985/86: Won 2-1 Beardsley, Roeder
1984/85: Won 2-1 Reilly, McDonald
1973/74: Lost 0-1
1972/73: Drew 0-0

I hope Gouffran is fit, as we need another option up front
I like his never say die attitude <ok>

Totally this. Gouffran in for Shola, Benni in for Marv, Debuchy in for Simmo and the three centre baks can fight over it. I'd even give Haidara a run out after last night and tell Santon he needs to knuckle down and stick to his duties.

Agree - pushes Ameobi out of the team and Cisse back through the middle! I would play (dependent on certain players fitness)

Krul
Debuchey Yanga Taylor Santon
Anita Cabaye
Sissoko
Gouff Cisse Marveaux

Subs
Elliot
Haidara
Colo
Tiote
Ben Arfa
Campbell
Guti

Morning all. Sorry ACS, I have to disagree when you say you should be more than a match for us. We are actually on better form than you over the last 6 games - comfortably beating the Champions and very nearly getting something at Old Trafford in that time. In the 4 games that Pochettino has been in charge we've had our opponents by the throat for at least one half. We would have destroyed Everton if we had taken our chances, we dominated the 2nd half against United, passed Wigan off the park in the 2nd half but went to sleep at the end and cruised to a win against (admittedly very poor on the day) City. I think it will be a close match with a draw being the likely result. What we've been doing well is press high up the pitch. City, Everton and to an extent United couldn't deal with it so you're going to have to be on your game to win on Sunday. We've got a fully fit squad and Lallana hasn't been able to get back into the starting line up yet which shows how well we're playing.

No problem in disagreeing mate, it's a game of opinions.
Our midfield is the strongest it's been in over a decade IMHO and that is where the game will be won or lost.
I was talking to a close mate last night who is a Man Utd fan and he said that Sissoko and Cabaye could walk into their starting 11 tomorrow. High praise indeed from a Man Utd fan.

TIM Krul is a major doubt for Newcastle’s Premier League game against Southampton on Sunday.

The goalkeeper – who made a series of stunning saves as United booked a place in the last 16 of the Europa League last night – left the Metalist Stadium on crutches after being caught by Johnathan Cristaldo late in the game.

Boss Alan Pardew is hopeful Krul has a chance of lining up at St James’s Park, but the Dutchman is rated a serious doubt.
“I thought it was a bad challenge,” Pardew told the Gazette. “He stamped on him, but hopefully he’ll be OK.”

Cheik Tiote, who missed the game with a virus – will again be available.

He got a good rattling, it wouldn't surprise me if he did miss the game on Sunday.

At first I thought he was play acting and shouted at him on tv to get up and be a man - but the slow mo showed his ankle twisting. Looked quite nasty. I don't think it was malicious, just one of those where he got caught awkwardly.

A Newcastle reporter is saying Krul is out for 5 weeks. Can any of you confirm this?

Agree midfield is key. Will be happy if Cabaye and Ben Arfa can't start. Think we have enough to get a result.

I hope it isn't true.
I personally don't rate Eliot so would hope Harps would step up.
