    I see the ugly side of football reared it's head again last night.
    Whilst appreciating that these incidents are isolated and reflect the minority I'd said all along that places like Ukraine and Russia are years behind us in terms of dealing with hooliganism and racism.
    I hope the fans came out ok in the end.
    Does anyone know people who were there?.. are they ok?

    http://www.themag.co.uk/the-mag-articles/newcastle-fans-attacked-at-match-in-the-ukraine/?

    A great result for Newcastle United on the pitch last night but for some of our fans it wasn’t the greatest off it.

    With the immediacy of social media such as Twitter, even before the match kicked off, United fans over in the Ukraine were reporting of attacks by locals in Kharkiv.

    (To feature like Dean, send in your letters/articles for the magazine/website to [email protected])

    Amongst the feedback were the following via Twitter;

    @Trotts01 “Newcastle fans taking a canny kicking outside away metro station, be careful”.

    @andy5powell “Loads of trouble before the game. Metalist charging Newcastle fans. Police letting them do it”.

    After the final whistle hundreds of Metalist fans also climbed over hoardings and confronted stewards but the two sets of fans didn’t come together.

    After the match the local police got their act together with @andy5powell commenting;

    “hats off after the game. Police got it right. Escorts to centre of town and large police presence about”.

    Newcastle fans who visited the Ukraine when we played matches against Dynamo Kiev will not be too surprised at the trouble, as it was well dodgy after the match when two late John Beresford goals gave us a 2-2 draw back in the nineties.

    Still, a bit of a shock for the fans experiencing this behaviour after pretty much trouble-free cultural visits to the likes of Bordeaux and Bruges.

    With Twitter being open to view by everybody, unfortunately there is always somebody who embarrasses themselves and so we had a village idiot from down the road;

    @adamframe “thats funny as f*** hahahahahah” #ftm #safc

    Though credit to Newcastle fan Andy Powell who came back with;

    “see you in Moscow (venue for next round v Anzhi)…oh wait…” #smb

    I was listening to radio Newcastle at the end of the game as I had lost my stream
    they said that loads of Metalist fans climbed over the barrier and heading towards, and confronting the Newcastle fans
    what with this and what happened with Spurs fans
    it's about time Uefa got their act together
    any sort of trouble in or around the ground should be investigated by Uefa in conjunction with the local Police
    ban the fans from attending home and away from their next european adventure
    When and if they get into Europe the following season and it kicks off again, then ban the Club, yes ban the Club until
    they get their house in order

    UEFA are a bunch of spineless bastards.
    An English fan would get done for farting whereas one from Eastern Europe or Turkey would be allowed flares and baseball bats.
    Double standards personified and it boils my piss.... rant over.

    Not that I condone violence in football but I hope the Toon supporters who were attacked kicked the **** out of their attackers

    This would be easy to stop. If both Newcastle and Tottenham declared that they won't be going to the next round of the matches unless UEFA sorted this out once and for all then it will happen again and again.

    If all the clubs refused to enter the next round of the cup then Blatter and his money grubbing cronies would soon come around to do something about this. But, as ever, the boards of all the clubs will cry crocodile tears and this will continue. I was going to say continue until someone gets killed but then we've had dead innocent fans in Turkey, Italy, Greence and Belgium all as a direct result of hooliganism and still nothing has happened.

    If the clubs sincerely cared for their fans, their patrons who pay the way directly and indirectly, then they wouldn't put them at risk. But which 'family orientated' club is brave enough to make the first stand? I've been waiting for one to step forward for the last thirty years and I am still waiting.

    No, Platini would say, "OK don't play then, you're out." Any excuse to banish all things English.

    Haven't you got a youngster that you sometimes take to the games HDQ? What kind of affect would it have had on them if they'd witnessed such scenes?

    I've often wanted to go to the Euopean games, my older brother has been nearly everywhere
    and tells me of his great adventures (being single helps)
    I've taking my son to the game at SJP for the last 9 years and it wouldn't be the same to go without him
    I feel it is very safe watching football at SJP even though we are seated in the Leazes End and come out at the same point as the away fans
    It was only our game against Chelsea have I had bother
    being kicked and punched from behind

    I wanted to stand and fight the bastards but my son dragged me away (suppose that's what I was brought up with in the 70's 80's etc)
    but when thinking back I knew my son was right (he's only 14)

    I can't be taking risks with my best mate <ok>

    If it was English fans beating up foreign fans, then we'd be kicked out of the competition and/or our fans would be banned from travelling to away games.

    ****ing Ukranian ****s.

    Their team is dirty and pathetic.

    I can tell you the answer easy enough as I was right in the middle of the **** that was Heysel. It took me over ten years before I could go to a football match again (i.e. anything with a half decent crowd) and I still have problems with crowds to this day.

    A dark day indeed, I remember the news being flashed on a screen and just couldn't take it all in.
