Not sure if this has been posted before. A lot of my best away days have connected with the result but some places are a great day out no matter what the score. I really liked going to Huddersfield in the league one days and the Millenium stadium with the roof closed was awesome. On the other hand I often wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the money I have wasted getting into Selhurst Park to sit in something worse than my garden shed. Particularly bad was seeing us beaten by the soon to become MK Dons in an empty morgue of a stadium where we outnumbered the home team's fans 3:1. Anybody got any best or worst away days or grounds they look back on fondly in the days before they were bulldozed for corporate arenas?
Liverpool - a city of two tales. Anfield, the last day of the standing kop. A procession of past and present Liverpool 'legends' appeared on the pitch including Bill Shankly's widow, Dalglish, Souness etc. A trademark half-volley into the top corner from the edge of the box by Jerry Goss was sufficient to piss on their parade as we won 1 - 0 Goodison Park In the days of Deehan, I think, who had replaced the recently departed Chris Sutton with the legend that wass...Mike Sheron 0 - 3 at half time, and many of the canary faithful had already seen enough and began drifting homewards. Not me, though. I stayed to watch the most inept 0 - 5 it's possible to watch, the highlight being we got into their half at one point!
Only just joined and didnt realise someone already had this name. I'll have to make a new one, sorry about that!
I remember going to Brisbane Road on a cold Wednesday night in the '70's for an FA Cup replay against Orient. As we stood there looking around the terracing something just didn't seem right. We had beaten West Ham in the league recently and the ICF evidently wanted some kind of revenge. Me and my mate stood there **** scared pretending to look well pleased when Orient took the lead. Then with just minutes to go, Roger Gibbons (remember him?), who normally couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, scored an absolute blinder to equalise. We wanted to jump up and down to celebrate but stood there trying to look pissed off. Anyway, we left the ground and hastily made our way back to coach. As the driver pulled away, what seemed like about a hundred WHU hooligans chased after the bus and a brick was thrown through the window. The driver decided to stop, everyone screamed at him to drive on, happy days
Similar thing happened to me (there was a lot of it about!) after we beat Leicester in the league back in '72. Security was high around the ground, but we were stuck in traffic in the City, and were set upon by a large group, who clearly had a plan. Managed to prevent them getting on the coach, but it was a cold ride home with no windows, in Winter! Great day football wise though, we needed those points and only avoided relegation by two points I believe.
Best was probably at Anfield, 0-0 game at the start of a season. Been to some shocking places - Wrexham and Rotherham come to mind.
Best was probably at Vicarage Road after we'd won promotion back in 04. The away end was just a huge party, and we won 2-1 too. Worst was probably Ewood Park in the 04-05 PL season. We got battered 3-0, played terribly and I was soaked through.
Something similar happened to me back in 1978 when we thrashed Millwall in the FA Cup. 2 Pitch invasions during the game and after the final whistle all hell broke loose as the Millwall thugs legged it after us as we hastily boarded our buses. I still remember to this day the flying glass as a brick was hurled through the window that I was sitting at. I can't believe that Bobby got into trouble afterwards when he made the comments about the thugs should have the flame throwers turned onto them! Happy days though!
Best away day was any of the victories at Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal but a 3-2 victory at Portman road, 1982 boxing day, or day after can't remember Dennis Van Wyk scored a blinder as did Martin O'Neil.
hi, i went to that game! went down on the train. got chased before and beat up after! welcome to east london!
Wembley '85 was a bit special of course, crap game but the result was all that mattered. I freely admit to having tears rolling down my cheeks as Dave Watson lifted the cup. please log in to view this image
I remember that game at Vicarage Road and you're right it was a huge party. That and Reading the week before when Mulryne scored, assisted by the ref were both incredible. Other than that Portsmouth away in 2011 and the Playoff finals both stand out as being special. I've been quite lucky with away games i've picked over the years but losing 3-0 at Swansea in 2011, 4-3 at Southampton in 2005 and 3-3 at Palace in 2005 werent great experiences.
Being an old git, I remember Watford on the last day of the season way back in '72 (I was ten years old). Match finished 1-1 Dave Stringer scoring for City and we secured the Division 1 (as was), League title please log in to view this image
I remember that Watford match, their fans singing you'll never take the rookery, so we did. Standing round the pitch at the end waiting for the whistle a bit like the 66 world cup ending. Great game and great season.
