SHOLA AMEOBI has warned Metalist Kharkiv that Newcastle United have “no fear” going into Thursday night’s second leg of their Europa League encounter in the Ukraine.

United will be backed by around 500 fans in eastern Europe but could be running out in temperatures of minus nine. And with Metalist fans desperate to see their side dump out Premier League opponents, Ameobi knows it will not be a night for the faint-hearted.

He told the Chronicle: “I don’t think there’s fear in that dressing room – we’ve got enough international players in our side. “I’m sure they’ve all played in hostile territory before. It’s not something that we’ll fear. “I’ll enjoy it, personally. We’ll try to prove a point. “It’ll probably be a bit colder, so there’s that to deal with as well. We’re excited. “We’re not behind in the tie, which is good. They haven’t scored an away goal.” And that may well be the crucial factor for Alan Pardew’s side.

Ameobi said: “The clean sheet’s always a nice one to have. We have to go over there and be on the top of our game to win this tie. “I imagine it’ll be quite a hostile atmosphere over there. “It’s going to be a really difficult game for us. “You could see they’re a really good footballing side – they could open us up. “We have to make sure we’re tight first and foremost, and get an away goal. That could prove decisive for us.”

United go into one of the biggest weeks of their season with the European battle quickly followed by an important meeting with relegation dogfight rivals Southampton on Sunday. But Ameobi preferred to focus on the task in hand.

He said: “This is a big tournament. It’s a European competition, and we want to get as far as we can.”

    From the Ronnie.

It's going to be a bit colder? Couldn't be worse than the weather we've had recently!

Shola is so articulate in interviews, wish he'd just retire and take up management with us... I'd love that, if only to laugh at everybody else's miserable faces <laugh>

Shola and Sammy were on the North East news last week at the Walker sports centre or some such, and it seemed Shola was there to be Sammy's crutch, the lad clearly not used to cameras... Or he's just a bit dim... No harm in either, obviously.

But are Metalist Kharkiv frightened of wor Shola, it's doubtful somehow. Pity we don't have Shearer playing anymore, now they just might be s**t scared of him !

They've heard of the Mackemslayer and how he wears his victims heads tied to his belt. I think they're a bit scared.

When all else fails, send for Shola.

The good old days when we truly had a world-class striker that gave managers sleepless nights are over ..at least for now.

God knows who we'll trot out against Metal....
(if Cisse goes out, we'll be strolling Shola out)

What worries me is that after he retires we will keep wheeling out contract after contract to his brother. Shola has the odd flashes at times but he is ****. So is Sammy. So frustrating watching either of them. If the shola who turned up against spurs at home last season was here every time he stepped on the pitch we would have a world beater on our hands. Sadly cameos off the bench evey now and then aren't enough.
