Being half term the holiday club our kids go to allows them to wear what they want. I was shocked and dismayed to see a couple of the kids there wearing onesies, particularly when one of them was a boy!!

It got me thinking about stuff I've worn over the years and whether or not I've ever been a fashion victim. From about 9-10 I had more influence over what clothes I got rather than what my mum thought looked good and the first fashion I remember insisting on following was about '79-ish and would have been part of the 2-Tone era when I managed to convince my mum that I had to have a Fred Perry polo shirt. Soon followed by a pair of 2-tone trousers and my first pair of Doc Martens

I was anti-fashion through my teens but amongst the 6th formers there was a trend for the de-mob three quarter length coats as sported by Morrissey which I did have.

What awful items of schmutter have you worn in the name of style and fashion?

    And yes, this is gay.

I was post punk, spikey hairdo, trench coat, pink leopard print shirts, beads...

    ...the list goes on.

I think I have destroyed almost all of the photies taken of me during that era but worry that some bastard relation is gonny pop up with them at every landmark birthday. Or worse, my funeral.

I'm liking how the girlies are flashing ass cheek these days.

I was in Holister in Braehead the other week and the female staff members were very cheeky :D

Blimey, the birds oop north must be made of strong stuff if they are walking around like that in February! Doon South the fashion is nordic leggings and what look like naff christmas jumpers. And the silly cows are walking around in pyjamas during the day too. Not even in an ironic way or in a chav-going-shopping way either. The teenies wear rupert the bear flanel trousers, loose fitting tops, Ugg boots and have their hair done up in a cross between Amy Winehouse and a just-got-raped-in-the-bushes sort of pile on their heads.

Roll on summer, leggings, vest tops, wonder bras and court injunctions!

Born 1971. About 1980 I was into 2 tone and wanted to be a skinhead but my mum wouldn't let me get my head shaved, did have a Harrington jacket though. By the early 80s I was into New Romantic and wore burgundy trousers and collarless shirt and winkle picker shoes. By the mid 80s I was into The Cure and used a ton of hairspray to get spikey hair and wore all black. By the late 80s it was anarcho-punk and when I left home for college finally got a mohican. Then early 90s raves and free festivals = dreadlocks and ripped clothes. Nowadays combat trousers and a t-shirt with some band on it. Oh and no hair. Fascinating stuff eh.

Baggy chinos with Fila trainers. And an oversized denim shirt.

Oxford bags with side pockets half way down the leg (so useless for putting your hands in), 3 button waist-band. Cap sleeve T-shirt, or paddle collar shirt with a bold geometric motif. Loakes fringe and tassel loafers for dancing, or black and white wedges, which made you 5" taller but were **** for running away from boot boys in. Neck length feather cut hair, parted in the centre. The girls all had Farrah Fawcett flicks, wore big pleated skirts and bobby socks, blue eye-shadow and cheap perfume.

The 70s. The decade that taste forgot.

    ****inell!! Are we twins?

Apart from the crustie dreadlocks our paths were eerily similar.

    2-tone - check - Madness/Specials/Selecter/Bad Manners/Body Snatchers
New Romantic - check - Soft Cell/Human League/Visage/Depeche Mode/Adam & The Ants with the odd Ultravox and Gary Numan thrown in
    80's goth - check - Bauhaus/The Cult/The Damned/Sisters of Mercy
    Mohican - check - Subhumans/Conflict/Discharge/Crass
    90's - proper long hair and metal/cross over - Metallica/Slayer/Megadeth/Iron Maiden/ACDC/Faith No More/Smashing Pumpkins/Rage Against the Machine/Janes Addiction/Chili Peppers etc

Did go to the odd rave and enjoyed it but more to do with the dance element rather than the drugs & lifestyle. Spent most of the 90's being a rock and roll superstar (groupies? ho yes). I am convinced Levis have had a change of sizing policy because the 32" waist jeans I always used to wear don't go over my knees now.

Looks like we diverged after anarcho-punk. I did go and see lots of punk/metal crossover bands like Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Doctor & the Crippens. Was in a couple of bands at school but never really got off the ground - "artistic differences"/falling out. Still listen to everything you mentioned apart from the Metal. Also Psychedelic, Indie, Industrial, Psychobilly, Soul, Funk, 60s, 70s, 80s...
