They may be scared that they get abuse from the crowd when even gays like Matt Lucas (not the Reading manager) admits he sings anti gay songs to Brighton fans so I dont think that should be an issue.

I think being shunned by team mates is the biggest concern, people like Swords who arent confident in their own sexuality might think they are eyeing them up all the time which can be a problem when you are naked a lot of the time.

Ive known 1 gay bloke (who was so far in the closet that he was in narnia) that I never saw again after I let it out I knew and 1 woman who I went out with (I hasten to add, she went with women before me and I didnt turn her into a muff diver!). From my experience the 10% figure is pure fantasy or only applies to the BBC.

Really? That sounds very much like a sweeping generalisation to me, but then I am clearly not an authority on the subject. It was always my impression that, whilst undoubtedly true of some people, this was generally a convenient accusation thrown back to insult those uncomfortable with the subject.

Does it follow that a racialist has a secret desire to be (say) black? I would suggest that of course it doesn't, that's absurd. Likewise, I presume that a Judophobe isn't hankering a secret desire to shout "Oy vey!" and become a Roundhead.

I think it's best tackling each case on its own merits rather than following some sort of prescription.

If you're comfortable with people regardless of their race/sexuality etc, there's no underlying fear. Its a primitive part of our genetic make up that makes us suspicious/afraid of those who are different. We've largely evolved past most of it but some still remains.

I did take that case on its own, you were applying it to everything else. Gay sex repulses me (as I suspect it does with virtually all straight men), Ill happily admit that but it doesnt mean I am uncomfortable if theres one around me nor do I go around banging on against it.

Its ok to not like it but tolerate it but the preachers and the starter westboro church are the type who I bet are gay and use the protest as a mechanism against admitting that.

Was I applying it to everything else? I hadn't realised. Nor did I think the previous post was aimed at me or anybody else in particular, Flyer. It's tough enough persuading Mrs Uber to have sex with me these days, so I don't much reckon my chances with anything else with a pulse, sadly.

 

I think that there are probably two sweeping generalisations that cover the issue: (1) hating gays as a method to disguise one's own sexuality; and (2), hating gays because it repulses that particular person - possibly because they've been exposed to others who feel the same way and feel that homosexuality is a 'life-style choice' akin to drinking coffee or something else. Sexual preference is part of a persons make-up from the very beginning and not a choice - a straight man or woman doesn't choose to like members of the opposite sex and the same applies to gay people. What I mean is that I wasn't raised in an effeminate manner - I was the captain of my boys football team and liked playing with soldiers etc. This might seem a bit banal, but its just trying to point out that 'gayness' isn't picked up or taught to people - something I feel some men, in particular, feel. Not sure how waffling this, make of it what you will.

As for footy, there seems to be a number of 'out' players within the football community who aren't public about their sexuality- fair enough. I'm sure there must be some footballers who have a rather hostile attitude towards gays, but given the response to Robbie from his former team mates it seems like there are plenty of easy going ones too.

It's really the terraces where the negative responses will come from. Chanting about a certain manager or player being gay is a common and popular song amongst most fans - Jose Morinhou one springs to mind. I also think that calling someone a '***got' is a common insult thrown around by players and fans - particularly when a player feigns injury. Perhaps I should have a thicker skin, but this I find insulting.

Personally, I don't mind banter coming from my friends, this is only to be expected and is part of normal life. I guess it's the real hatred you sometimes encounter, but in general these aren't the sort of people I would socialise with anyway.
