Surely Puncheon is one of the players we should be desperate to hang on to if we go down?

I think puncheon won't be first team next year anyway so wouldn't mind to see him go as much as everyone else in our current best team.

If he doesn't want to sign for us we will get someone better in I have no doubt

He will stay if contract offered. Why move for West Ham or Newcastle. I bet it is already under discussion.

This! He will not want to play in the championship. Would be great to have him here next season but if he wants to go or tries to hold us to ransom we will get somebody at least as good, if not better.

Hmmm if it is true and he is holding out to see which league we are going to be in....then I would prefer we didn't sign him. I prefer players that want to play for Saints not players that think about money all the time.
I cannot see Cortese getting tied down with what amounts to blackmail. There is ways of negotiating round the what "league we are in next season syndrome" That can benefit the player as well as the club. I'm just not sure that Cortese wants him here...I could be wrong, just not sure he fits into the pattern that is being weaved..............
The other side of the coin maybe that when Puncheon went on the transfer list no body came in for him as there was a fee invovled. If he is free of course others perhaps might take a look as he is not taking money out of their coffers. Under those circumstances Newcastle is his better bet with Pardew.....can't see him getting much of a look in at West Ham to be honest with big Sam.

Yeah but the terms of the deal might be different depending on what league we are in.

I can't see Puncheon wanting to leave unless he gets a brilliant offer from elsewhere. He is well liked here now and playing for the first time in ages, so he would be risking that if he moves elsewhere.

As much as I would like this to be true of all our players, we have to be realistic. Footballers want to play in the highest league possible and earn as much as possible. He's not a Saint through and through, he's a footballer and I think if we take that opinion we'd lose a lot of our players.

I reckon we're working on both Boruc and Puncheon's new contracts and maybe Cortese likes to give them at a certain time in the season so that these players are fighting for their money?

This is a non-story for me. They know his contract is running out and are speculating based on that. Puncheon has said he wants to stay and that talks are underway, to suggest he will leave is fanciful.

I'm reading it that Cortese is waiting to see what league we're in next season, not Puncheon?

You read it correctly, because that's what the article says.

Well yes, exactly, so I'm not sure quite why people are saying it's Punch holding out to see this, and criticising him for doing so.....

I fully agree with this. Some of you seem to be forgetting this is from the Mirror which is not the most reliable source to say the least. Oh bloody hell, as I type this the fire alarm has gone off in the library. FFS!

Punch has formed a pretty good attacking partnership with Clyne. He's not gonna want to give that up in a hurry...................

Agreed. I doubt they know any more than we do about it. Speculation written in the form of a factual statement.

Is it not possible it's a bit of both and maybe there is an offer based on staying in the prem and a decrease in wages if the unthinkable happened?

Maybe Punch wants to see us secure our prem status before signing?
