Newcastle's youngsters played their third and final group game at the Torneo da Viareggio in Italy on Saturday, but despite recording a second successive win missed out on a Group Stage place due to goal difference.

However they did improve upon our last showing in the tournament two years ago, when a more experienced squad managed just two points from three qualifiers.

    Group 9:
Pos Team Plyd W D L GD Pts
    1 Milan........ 3 2 1 0 .2 7
    2 Newcastle. 3 2 0 1 .1 6
    3 Empoli...... 3 1 0 2 .1 3
    4 Congo...... 3 0 1 2 -4 1
    .
Bit tough, it would have been a good experience for them to go all the way.

    No pun intended Obi.

That's tough after two wins from three - often enough to qualify. Still good experience for them.
Is Mbabu already too old for this tournament? I thought he was in the youth development squad.

    Do you mean Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa?

He was born on the 15th May 1989.

Would have thought he could have played, he's only 17 isn't he?

That's what I thought, but I didn't see his name in the squad.

Whenever I see his name I imagine Vic Reeves saying it in his Shooting Stars style.

Be interesting to see how many of these kids get the chance to develop - and are given the chance.
Hope they do - as we could have a few gems!
