Okay this has been slightly touched on in several articles, but as far as i've seen no actual articles on the subject. So the question i'm asking is, if we stay up, as now expected, who should we sell? I think its quite clear the size of the squad we have at the moment in unsustainable and needs reducing, but how would you reduce it? For me outs would be: Chaplow, Martin, Butterfield, Richardson, Hammond, Chaplow, Guly, Tadanari Lee, Barnard and Sharp. New deals for Boruc and Puncheon (hopefully). Not forgetting a new 5 year deal for long serving Southampton devotee, Tommy Forecast
Not so sure, the lad is 23 and still couldn't get in the Crystal Palace squad for most of this season. Yet to see anything to suggest he is, or will ever be a premiership defender.
We would hardly get any money for him, so I don't see the point in selling unless to asks to be sold. Might as well hang onto youth products.
Valid point, although i'm not sure hanging onto youth products for the sake of it on (rough estimate) £5k a week is viable with new financial fair play regulations coming in.
You dislike Chaplow so much, you think we should get rid of him twice!? Yeah would be nice to get rid of these players but I'm not sure how easy it would be shifting them on permanent deals. I think it will be more gradual than just getting rid of all of them in the summer as we need to bring in quality replacements.
It will be interesting to see if any of the fringe players respond well to Poch's style and get more game time before the end of the season. On the other hand some that played under Nigel may not suit the new style. So I shall reserve judgement.
Think the key to growing as a squad is slowly evolving, rather than doing a QPR like, lets buy a whole new team technique. Basically sell the fringe players, they get replaced by bit part players who get replaced by standard regular first teamers who get replaced by key players who, ideally, get replaced by new signings.
There's a case for it if we're going to bring in more talented players in his position. At his age he might want to be playing first team somewhere else, rather than waiting for the occasional chance here.
Because he is a fringe player. Like it or lump it, he isn't going to be a key player and is ageing. Despite actually quite rating him, if we hope to push on into the top half of the table and further, players like Guly can't be regulars.
Although there's no-one in that list I would be particularly sad to lose, I wouldn't advocate getting rid of quite that many players. We'd have to replace most of them and I'd like to think we would only bring in players who are better than, or at least equivalent to the best of what we already have. Better to buy 2 or 3 quality players to add to the squad than have to buy 6 or 7 mediocre ones because we need cover.
It is true there has to be a clear out in the summer. I see the OP has not mentioned Hammond or De-Ridder. Does that mean he expects them to stay? I think you are right for a lot of the players mentioned I would be surprised if Guly stayed another season although he would not be my choice for leaving the club. Martin should get himself another club perhaps as it will do his career good. As previously said I think there will be a clear out. Will be interesting who Poch's choices will be to replace those leaving.
The op does mention Hammomd, but not de ridder...agree with above I would keep Guly to be a fringe player but would let him go if he wanted first team football.
Saying you would get rid of Guly because he is only a fringe player is daft. On that logic alone, we'd only have a squad of 14/15. Anyone else would be on the fringes and therefore sold.
If we got rid of Guly I would be disappointed, he was in great form before he got injured. Guly will be great for Pochettino's style, as he is definitely one of our hardest working players.
Keep : Boruc, Davis, Clyne, Richardson, Fonte, Hoovield, Forren, Yoshida, Shaw, Fox, Cork, Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Ramirez, Lallana, Guly, Puncheon, Mayuka, Lambert, Rodriguez Outs: Chaplow, Martin, Butterfield, Hammond, Sharp, Lee, De Ridder, Reeves, Seaborne Loan: Gazzaniga
With players like Guly, who aren't necessarily constant presences in the lineup but are useful, the determining factor has to be whether they want to be here in that role. If Guly's happy playing in a little more than half of our games, I'm quite happy to have him. If he wants to have a greater role than we're likely able to offer, and a team comes in for him, allow him to leave. Haven't heard any indication that it's the latter, so I'd like to have him in the squad for next year. Same applies with Chaplow...he plays very rarely, but he's perfect for situational cover with the current tactical setup. Of the above, I'd like to keep Guly and Richardson, Chaplow if he's willing. Also wouldn't mind having Hammond back, though I suspect that he wants a more expansive role than we can offer.
