How about if they did have it as a knock-out but with extra rounds. And the bigger sides entered it in the 3rd/4rd round like in the FA Cup with no seedings.

I would hate a European Super League. Just get the feeling it would make the role of fans completely irrelevant due to the money involved.

I don't think you are thinking this reformat of the Champions League through guys. People already bemoan the 'big four/six' and a widening money gap, which is a bit of a fallacy as there has remained a fairly consistent balance of League Winners over the past 40/50 years (I've just written a paper on it). Anyway my views:

Champions League TV Revenue is worth an estimated £50million (apparently £70million for the eventual winner) of a qualifying English team. We now have the Cup Winners and League Winners as the sole qualifiers. So providing that is 2 different teams, 2 teams will get £100million at the end of the season and the rest of the league will get, relatively, £100million less than those teams. There is also less spots so the number of different qualifiers each year will naturally decrease, with 2 places being harder to crack than 4. Surely you can see the potential for 1 or 2 teams to break away from the rest of the league in a way that doesn't happen with a top 4?

There is also the potential for some players to move to so-called second tier leagues and away from the Premier League. Van Persie? Why stay at Arsenal finishing 3rd with the diminishing hope of mounting a challenge because Utd and Chelsea have just banked £100mil for their already superior squads. Why not go to Porto or Benfica, he at least has the chance to play the showpiece games against Barca and Real.

We'll also end up with a load of exhibition games where- as someone said before- you'll have Barcelona playing Turkemistan Utd in the early rounds. There will be no more AC/Spurs, Liverpool/Olympiakos, etc because those teams won't be in it. Istanbul 2005, a final not only special for the miraculous comeback but also for heroic underdog performances at every stage... never happened! We didn't even qualify! And while we're at it the FA Cup is being criticized for losing it's appeal, why not just make it exclusively for the Premier League (our equivalent of having the Champions League for just the top 2). The League Cup is a poor man's FA Cup (the Europa to the Champions League if you like) so i don't even want us to play in it, so might as well scrap that. Whilst i think about it, as i now only want to compete in the 2 competitions i've decided are worthwhile (because that's what's football is all about, it was invented to give people a chance to win trophies) i think we should scrap the rest of the football league. Ah that's better, down to about 40 games a season and only 20 teams, thank god there's less football to watch and those players don't have to tire themselves out any more than they have to playing that pesky game! Anybody would think they were athletes...

Apologies for the rant and i like that people are trying to be innovative, but at what point did we start resenting having more football to watch and more competitions to win? The Premier League and Champions league are as prestigious as they've ever been so if any competitions are being 'diluted' surely its the others. Maybe we should scrap the Champions League for the sake of the Europa then? :afro:

    @ skrtel nips

I created this thread because I wanted a normal discussion with different opinions and no pricks, and fortunately with the exception of a comment or 2 at the start, it has worked out that way.

The money for the ucl would stay the same for the participants in it, ie about 30 mil each adding up to 60, ie 40 mil less, which can go into the europa increasing incentive, or (more likely) into platini’s fat back pocket.

I also had some thoughts for the Euro and World Cup qualifiers which my mates (yes I have some), slaughter me for saying they do not like, but im sure others will agree:

International qualifiers to be played over 2 months, but split, meaning January and probably September, of 5 or 6 games, and hence cutting out those meaningless friendly matches that get played in order to fill the week before or after an actual match.

This would also increase the level of performances (in theory) because teams would get a prolonged period under the manager, and develop their gameplay a lot more.

The program would go something like this for England instead one match every couple of months:

    Tuesday 4th January 2011: Bulgaria (h)

    Saturday 8th Januray 2011: Montenegro (a)

    Tuesday 11th January 2011: Switzerland (h)

Saturday 15th January 2011: No Match

    Tuesday 18th Januray 2011: Wales (a)

    Saturday 22nd January 2011: Wales (h)

Tuesday 25th January 2011: No Match

    Saturday 29th Januray 2011: Switzerland (a)

Wednesday 2nd February 2011: FA CUP or Return to League Matches

And then the traditional 2 game period for first week of September 2011 (the same period england beat germany 5-1) for the remaining games of Montenegro (h) and Bulgaria (a).

Over the course of the year, this does not change much, because it takes out those 7 day periods in September/October/November/March.

Anyone else agree? There must be someone?
