I think that would be a bad move. Quality player and no doubt he would be a good captain buts its complacency that concerns me. GJ was really poor a couple of seasons back when he had no competition for his Liverpool or England place. Making him captain will pretty much guarantee him a starting place.
GJ doesn't talk much on the pitch. Unless it's arguing about cover from the guy ahead of him on the wing. Agger has some fire in his belly.

True, by the time Gerrard retires Hendo could be as good as him at his peak and the first name on the team sheet.
If were talking right now we need a replacement for VC for Carra and a VVC for when Gerrard and/or the new VC aren't playing. It has to be a leader whose passivnate, can organise the team off the ball and, most importantly, work the Ref (people forget about this but its imp in the PL look at how effective Stevie and Carra are at this and how it helps due to them being so well respected), So it needs to be someone who will spend a lot of the game close to the Ref also. So, with the above in mind, there are two obvious candidates to succeed Carra in the here and now, and thats Agger or Lucas. I think for the near future going forward with Stevie, Agger and Lucas will be sufficient. If I have to choose between Lucas and Agger its a really tough decision. I think Agger just shades it as he's more vocal and organised and would be a bigger voice in the changies imo. If were looking long term, say 5 years + then, first of all, it depends who'll still be here. I think Lucas and Agger will still be here, as well as Hendo, but not Suarez, so I reckon in 5 years time it could be Agger as Capt, Lucas as VC and Henderson as understudy to fill in for them when not playing and these would be my choice too. With rotation and all the diff comps we play you need 3 solid captains/leaders as there will be plenty of times when the C and VC aren't starting a game. So, for next season, Stevie and Agger with Lucas filling in as necessary, and long term I'd go Agger for Capt, Lucas VC and Hendo deputising as necessary.
From the players that we currently have I would say that the choice is between Agger, Lucas and as an outside chance Henderson. If the decision had to be made today then I'd go for Agger.

More seriously... will have to be Lucas if who is most suited... Suarez if we're using it as bait to make him stay. I bet Rodgers picks new captain this summer.
Current players, I'd give it to Lucas with Agger as VC. The latter is more injury prone than the former despite recent issues! Suarez as third choice
