I don't think it's forgetting at all. I would hate to forget what Nigel did for us, he was incredible, but I honestly see Pochettino as an upgrade.
Nigel is, and will always be, a legend. I'll be a fan of any team he manages, and I hope that we see him and Pochettino dueling for years to come. I made this thread because I thought that it was a terrible decision at the time, given all that Nigel had accomplished; after four games, it is becoming clear that the squad is responding to Pochettino's style, as we have played the best football of the season under his leadership. That's not to take away a damned thing from Adkins, but it's impossible to argue against the move at the moment.
Poch is standing on the shoulders of Nigel. He said himself that he respected Adkins for his work and the condition of the team when he came in. I have every confidence that Nigel would have kept us up, but it is no disrespect to him to suggest that Mauricio can move us in a different direction that may achieve more. The whole point of the thread is that Nicola doesn't appear to have made a major rick...MP is a good manager and not the buffoon the red tops tried to make out.
Have to agree. I was and am a massive Nigel fan but the players do seem to have more belief under MP.
Still too early for me but early signs are promising. Teams often seem to up their game when a new manager comes in, that may be all this peak is, if we can sustain it til the end of season and into the next then who knows... Even QPR managed to grab some decent results when 'Arry started! Dismissal of nigel still leaves a bad taste but that in no way detracts from my support of the new manager.
In his interview MP showed he is both smart and very aware of the Saints fans love of NA by carefully acknowledging the work NA had put in and the great shape the squad and individuals players were in when he took over. Smart move not to criticise the Legend NA
Strewth guys...we are not forgetting our Nigel.....we are in this league because of him.....No one can ever take that away from him. He was a very successful manager at Southampton and will be remembered because of that. Cortese it seems felt that he couldn't take us to the next level and could not afford him the time to learn how to get us there, so decided to let him go and brought in the new guy. It is early day's guys, very early days. Yesterday has to be the result of the season so far. No one can deny that since he has arrived Poch has changed the style of play to a style the lads seem to like and can work too. All seem to have benefited from the change of management. So yes it is right to be cautiously optimistic, you have to admit though he seems to be going in the right direction.
We're continuing where we left off under Nigel, nothing more, nothing less. The team was steadily improving and adapting to this league before he left, now that improvement is gathering pace. Clearly Pochettino is a very capable manager, and Cortese appears to have found us another gem, but I'm not convinced a Saints side under Adkins wouldn't have gained just as many points from the last four games. Indeed, it's not inconceivable that the points tally would have been more under Nige than the 5 we've got under Mauricio. As someone else has said earlier on this thread, the sacking of Adkins still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, perhaps because I'm getting older and have an older person's values. However, I feel a hell of a lot better after yesterday, and am incredibly grateful to the players and to both Nigel Adkins and Mauricio Pochettino. And, grudgingly perhaps, to Cortese also. He's my favourite banker.
I don't think it's a contradiction to say you loved Adkins and are optimistic about the future with Pochettino. Whether we finish 10th, 15th, or 20th this season it won't change my respect for the work Nigel did, or what he was like as a person. Nicola is in charge of this club, and therefore it's his responsibility to make the club successful. And I doubt there are any Saints fans around who think we are going to go down now. (ok maybe one)
When MOTD showed the managers shaking hands at the end of the opening game of the season last night, I felt a little pang and said "Ah, Nigel." He'll never be forgotten; always be loved by Saints fans and I'll always look out for his teams. However, I fully understand the decision and I am a Saints fan first and foremost. It is clear why we took the decision and I trust it to be the right one. I can't wait for the quiet, media shy NC to stand next to the FA Cup or the UEFA cup and say "Thanks Nigel, you helped get this at the start" and then take his suit jacket off, stick two fingers up to the media and dance around Wembley, leading the team in a "Conga"
Must admit, that was one hell of a performance from 1st whistle till last !!!! Still buzzing today.... I, like most wondered what the hell was going on when 'OUR NIGE' was given the royal boot and we all all said Maurichio who?? But cast your minds back to when Pardew was sacked, we all said Nigel who?? Nigel took Pardew's team and took them to the next level and beyond. Now MP has come in and in his first few games, it looks like he's taking Nigel's team onto the next level again.. No, we will never forget where Pardew took us and we will definitely not forget where Nigel took us, as has already been said, Nigel has written his name into Saints history and will always be a LEGEND.... If this style of play continues, then lots of happy days lie ahead for us Saints fans!! In Nicola we trust...
Oh there's no doubt about it at all IMO. I am very very excited about the future of SFC. I will never forget who got us into the PL with back to back promotions but under Adkins I think we were just going to be PL survivors. Under Pochettino we will push on and compete for European places in the near future.
To get Nicola to do the conga you will have to give him beer. Apparently never touches it, but had a few on the bus back from our penultimate game in League 1 (yes, he was on the bus) and agreed to fund the Los Vegas trip.
I seem to recall that Matt Le Tiss rarely drinks beer either, perhaps he and Nicola have more in common than they realise!
