No one ever used megabus? it's brilliant, paid £11 return for two people to London, that included a virgin train coming back

Train tickets normally go on sale about 12 weeks beforehand I believe.
If you go on moneysavingexpert.com it will tell you on the site & also tips such as combining a load of tickets through stations for the same journey as sometimes that can knock a load off the total cost.
And it's well worth getting a young persons railcard, it's basically for anyone under 25 or in full-time education, but if you renew just before your 25th birthday I believe, you can get it til your essentially 26.

Sunday was the first game in London I have been to. Went on the Saturday morning with the Northern Echo deal of £20 return. It was a bit of a carry on trying to get a hotel (as stupidly didn't book in advance) and ended up staying in Barking (near West Ham). Didn't get too drunk on the Saturday night as it had been a long day but you can find some right bargains for drinks believe it or not. In the Slug and Lettuce in Leicester Square (probably one of the most expensive places too) you can get 4 Jagerbombs for £10! Thats even better than places up here!

I had a fantastic time (eventhough I thought I'd done my ankle in after falling down the back of the seat when jumping on it when we scored in the 93rd minute)

The train is the way to go. I didn't get the train till 8pm but there was a few toon lads on it playing cards and just having a good time.

I think I will be trying to go to Fulham next season as really want to go to Craven Cottage!
