QPR: 5 Ways Râs Can Avoid Relegation â¢February 4, 2013 â¢Jack Johnson Six points from safety. Games against the teams in 1st and 8th coming up. The departure of their top scorer. Assorted injury concerns. Itâs fair to say the Queens Park Rangers are staring down the barrel somewhat. Despite a marked improvement since Harry Redknapp took the reigns from Mark Hughes, the West London side actually find themselves further from safety than when Hughes departed. If Redknapp is to keep them up he needs to sort a few things out sooner rather than later. Hereâs five ways Queens Park Rangers can avoid relegation this term; 5. Get The Best Out Of Granero/Hoilett When Rangers added flair players like Estaban Granero and Junior Hoilett to their squad over summer there was excitement amongst the fans, and rightly so. Granero has played almost 70 games for Real Madrid and the capture of Hoilett was a genuine coup with many bigger clubs sniffing around Blackburnâs most exciting prospect. Unfortunately we just havenât seen the best of either players so far. Hoilett has severely struggled for form, only starting nine games â thatâs six less than Jamie Mackie â and looking a million miles from the exciting young talent who almost kept Rovers up last season. Granero started well and looked a cut above many of his team mates during the opening weeks of the campaign. As the season wore on he also struggled though, drifting in and out of games, and not getting much game time in his favoured position just behind the striker. Furthermore Harry Redknapp doesnât seem to be much of a fan of either player. Hoillet made his first appearance under Redknapp in the shock 1-0 victory over Chelsea in which he also picked up a hamstring injury. Granero has also struggled for game time under the former Spurs boss and didnât even feature in Saturdayâs draw with Norwich after starting on the bench. In these players Rangers have two attacking talents who certainly have the potential to unlock defences and lay on chance after chance for the strikers as well as grabbing a few themselves. âArry looks to have added some defensive solidity, now he needs to work on their creativity and if Granero and Hoilett can stay fit a prolonged run in the side from either should be fruitful. 4. Find A Settled Back Four Since their embarrassing capitulation against Liverpool in late December Rangersâ defence has tightened up considerably. They have conceded just the one goal in five league games, including clashes with Spurs and Chelsea, however this has generally been achieved by playing two defensive midfielders who screen the defence and contribute little else. It has meant that their soft centre is much less often exposed, but robbed the strikers of service. If Redknapp is to realistically keep the Hoops up then he needs to forfeit one of his midfield spoilers in favour of a more creative player and place some faith in his defence. And the best thing for this will be a settled back four. The addition of Christopher Samba should make a big difference (to matters on the pitch as well as the Râs accounts) but he needs a regular partner. It is a shame QPR couldnât have persuaded Ryan Nelsen â their most consistent defender of the season so far â to at least stay until the summer. Anton Ferdinand has also departed, but he will be no great loss and should never have been more than a squad player. With the transfer window now closed QPR need to select Sambaâs partner from their current squad. The most likely candidates are probably Clint Hill or Tal Ben-Haim, neither of whom instil much confidence. Instead Redknapp could deploy Stephane Mâbia in the centre of defence, a position he is more than comfortable in, and suddenly his back line looks much more formidable. The defence would also benefit from consistent selection at full back. Fabio, who is on loan from Manchester United, seems the best option on the left whilst the right back slot can either be filled by Nedham Onouha or Armand Traore. Whoever Redknapp picks he should show some faith in and stick with over the coming weeks. 3. Donât Pick Rob Green Rob Green cannot have been amused when Julio Cesar was signed towards the end of the summer transfer window. He came to Rangers presumably expecting to be the number one keeper for the foreseeable future. Therefore the singing of a treble winning keeper who has played over 60 games for Brazil, and who seemingly still has plenty of ability at the age of 33, would not have been greeted with a smile. Unfortunately for Green sentiment cannot come into the picture at this stage of the season and Cesar is simply a much better keeper than Green. The Brazilian has proved his quality this season with several stunning performances tis season â earning a recall to the national side in the process â and seems ready to get stuck into a relegation battle without thinking himself above it. Redknapp needs to keep Cesar as the number one and keep Green on the bench. Simple 2. Turn Draws Into Wins Draws against sides such as Tottenham and Manchester City are all well and good, but if Rangers are to stay up this season then it is imperative that they take all three points from sides in the bottom half of the table. They have only won two games all season and really need to work on closing out games, or scoring late winners. A win against Norwich on Saturday would have been worth more to QPR than their admittedly impressive performances against Spurs and City, and would have been much easier. Unbeaten in five is all well and good, but four points from four is less impressive and a point a game is not enough for Rangers at this stage. Winnable fixtures are coming up and a victory over Southampton or Sunderland will be worth more to Rangers than a hard thought point against Manchester United. 1. Find A Reliable Goalscorer When faced with a relegation scrap a consistent goalscorer can be crucial. Midfielders know that if they play the right pass there is someone there who can finish and a player who can manage double figures over the second half of the season will no doubt add valuable points. The Transfer window has been and gone with Rangers sending one forward, Djibril Cisse, out on loan and bringing in Loic Remy from Marseille. Cisse certainly has his talents, but a reliable goalscorer he is not. Therefore the addition of Remy should be an upgrade, if only he could stay fit. Unfortunately the Frenchman has already picked up a groin strain and look set for a spell on the sidelines. Will the returning Bobby Zamora be the man to save Rangers instead? It seems unlikely, but if QPR canât find someone to grab them goals on a regular basis then they are surely destined for the Championship.
On the 5th point, I hope everyone saw the huge improvement on Sat after Bobby came on. He will be a huge player for us for the rest of the season. He's quality.
