I really do hope our management have midfielders lined up in the loan window or our season is gone with no time to recover !
i know what you mean it's happened to us in the past .good luck for the rest of the season sorry we ruined your night.
Our night was ruined when all became aware of that team sheet, just wonder if our manager will act on it or stick to his guns ? well done rocky, all the best for your boys and the season...an impressive turn around by your boys...can we have lewis back short term ?!
Errrrrr..... Was i not roundly questioned by many on this board when I suggested this very fact after the closing of the transfer window????
Yeah maybe a bit but I think the problem is that we have enough midfielders however Gregory was the wrong one to bring in we only needed someone else decent there but MA made a big mistake signing him.
I think I'm one of the few who agrees with the subbing of Weston. Whilst he seemed to be the only one capable of doing anything at all, Harriman hsd the beating of him all day, and we had to try something new. With regards to the midfield, I've mentioned about Frampton before. I really hope to god Gregory is just taking time to settle in. But yeah, agree with everyone that having a centre half as your cm, and your most attacking central midfielder no less, is not the way to go! I was also disappointed to see Matt Fish was back to his old self again - I'm not sure he managed to play one pass to any of OUR players the entire evening? Nelson, Barrett, Legge - all had top games though.
I think Nelson was man of the match easily, it was nice to see him back to his best (Gordan Banks eat your heart out) he was brilliant and if he did not concede it would have been a 9 out of 10 for me but it is an 8 out of 10, I am not rating the rest as it is not even worth it after that as most of you see how bad it was and I want to move on from talking about the game.
Poor poor performance last night. You can talk about playing Frampton out of position but in the first half Wycombe literally had one chance on goal from that 35 yard shot by Sam Wood. Took him off the defence had no cover. Robinson is obviously likes to get forward more and Gregory just looked totally out of his depth. I can't tell you how fuming I was when Gregory started messing about with the ball and then lost it when he caused the first goal. Weston and Whelpdale were the bright points for me. Weston only real player that made chances apart from Cody's long one on one chance coming from an angle in the first half. Whelpdale showed his class from the outset when he came on, his passing helped calm the team down and created a couple of chances. Don't forget his first touch was nearly an assist. Legge looked very good in the first half but I think he struggled in the second half due to Martin and Fish both taking their time to track back (probs more so Martin). Next game Mad Dog needs to address the midfield issue. 4-1-2-1-2 will work. Frampton playing the same role as Wright did. Lee attacking mid or Weston there. Weston and Whelpdale need to start. More importantly we need to pass it more! RANT over
I have been thinking in the first half Frampton may not have been that good but we were stronger in the second half we was not strong so I see what some of you are saying by him playing means we may have to grind out wins. I think we are better playing him than Gregory and then play an attacking midfielder.
Rocky, the style of football played by the side last night was unrecognisable from that of the side which did us 1-0 in pre-season. The play then was so sharp and so fluent that it prompted me to post straight away that I thought The Gills would be promoted. In theory, the addition of Burton and latterly McDonald should have been the final pieces in the jigsaw but things don't seem to be clicking at the moment. As Born Again Gill said earlier on in this thread, the forwards can't score if no-one's passing to them, and they were living off scraps last night. Gills - hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in here.
The team then: Gills: Nelson, Fish, Martin, Flanagan, Davies, Payne, Lee (Birchall 80mins), Whelpdale, Dack (Jackman 61mins), Kedwell (Allen 84mins), Strevens (Montrose 61mins). Subs: Forecast, Evans, Brown. The team now: 01 Nelson 02 Fish 03 Martin 06 Legge 12 Frampton (Robinson - 46' ) 26 Barrett 08 Lee 24 Weston (Whelpdale - 63' ) 28 Gregory 20 Burton (Kedwell - 66' ) 29 McDonald Substitutes 21 Forecast 15 Davies 07 Whelpdale 10 Robinson 14 Allen 09 Kedwell 17 Birchall No Jackman. No Payne. No Montrose basically the transfer tinkering of Martin Allen has screwed it up. I have read about balancing the books, I see that just as excuses for MadDog, if he wants answers to the current situation, look in the mirror. Gregory? I keep reading we can not judge a player so soon. Sorry but he was considered good enough by MA to come in to a auto promotion side at the expense of others, we are near on five games in, so he needs to find his feet and way pretty sharply. I felt from the beginning I was not impressed but kept quiet and gave him time. Every poor performance now is costing us points. Before anyone says it, that is not judging him on one mistake, but more the icing on the cake!
lagree BRB, last nights performance was woefull but let not get to carried away yet. "No Jackman. No Payne. No Montrose basically the transfer tinkering of Martin Allen has screwed it up." Disagree a bit there. These players were hardly key this season when we were performing : jackman wasnt used and payne and montrose were not setting the world alight (only one or the other would be generally tarting at best) . i think its more to do with whelpdale and lee losing a bit of form and teams now cancelling out weston. New blood was needed but the problem is that he may have made a mistake in Gregory. Either way, going forward an additional fresh face or two in midfield could invigorate us for the last stretch .
GILLINGHAM vs. WYCOMBE. Yet again I decided to sit in the Medway stand, which was a great view point of the game. Conditions were better for football than last Tuesday, 05 February 2013. The Gills lined up with an unchanged team, and with early exchanges it seemed clear that Wycombe came to counter attack, and go away with a draw, or sneak a goal and get the 3 points. Gillingham played ok, without really dominating or creating any meaningful chances, but saying that there were a couple that could have gone in and changed the shape of the game. Half time came and still at 0-0. 2nd half started and Gills made one change Frampton off and the new signing on, now for me he played ok, but without really imposing himself, so he will need time to settle. Wycombe could have scored 3-4 times if it was not for the mom and gills good man behind the sticks (Nelson), but eventually they did break through to score and grab the win 1-0, which I felt disappointed about as a Gills fan, as we deserved at least a point at times, but we need to sort out being hit on the counter with a team with pace and movement like Wycombe had. Now there were a lot of fans debating the side on Twitter after the game, some points I agreed on, some they should have slept on and then commented. Now my views on the current team are this….. We have a good goalkeeper and a good defensive unit in the back 4. The wide players do ok and offer a good threat to the opposition. The strikers are good and will get goals with the service they deserve. Now for me the problem lies in the middle of the park, which for me is where the game is won and lost. So we (Gillingham) currently go with 2 defensive midfielders, which are fine for away games to counter and get a result, but for home games we need to have the initiative to be the attacking team. So the need to control that midfield, what I think should happen, is play 1 defensive midfielder and 1 ball playing midfielder to control the game, now for some reason Gillingham does not do this and I am sure with good reason, who am I to criticise as they have got more experience in the game/management of football. Personally I would keep Weston and then add Whelpdale on to add good quality out wide, now for the centre I would take out the current 2 players and bring in a pair of Charlies. That would be Charlie Allen and Charlie lee, now for me this is a better option, they would both give 100% and would give a good balance of defence and attack, and control to the midfield. Now for the interest of future loan signings I would go and get a ball playing midfielder, like what Gillingham let go in Jack Payne. It was a defeat last night and hard to take as a win would have seen a return to the top, draw level on points, but a defeat only leaves Gillingham 1 point adrift, not the end of the world and plenty of football still to play. Let’s all get behind Gillingham and improve this home form. Hope you enjoyed my report. Keith Tinker.
