Mali make final four as Samba goes off injured...

SAMBA Diakite was forced off after 24 minutes in Mali’s Africa Cup of Nations victory against South Africa on Saturday.

The Rangers midfielder was substituted midway through the first half in Durban with an injury.

However, that did not stop his side from going on to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition following a penalty shoot-out win.

Bafana Bafana missed three of their spot-kicks, with Lehlohonolo Majoro shooting wide to give Mali victory.

The hosts had taken the lead in the first half, with striker Tokelo Rantie firing home from Thuso Phala's cross.

Mali captain Seydou Keita drew his side level, heading past South Africa keeper Itumeleng Khune from six yards.

After extra-time substitute Siphiwe Tshabalala scored his side's first spot-kick. But Furman, Mahlangu and Majoro all missed for South Africa, with Cheick Tidiane Diabate, Tamboura and Mahamane Traore all converting theirs to ensure Mali's progression to the last four.

Mali will now face Nigeria on Wednesday (3pm) in the final four of the cup competition.

I agree entirely. Whilst the ACON is a money spinner for the continent, in truth Europe rules world football - hence why it's at odds with FIFA's World Cup selection process.

As more African players become key players within the top European teams, the pressure will grow on them to forego international football.

We're missing a trick with him, he's a winger, waiting to happen IMO.

No great loss in my opinion. Does more harm than good.

I'm beginning to think that Diakite at his best would be a better bet than Mbia.

Maybe he's a striker in disguise. We need Harry to find someone that can find the net at the Club now.

I know what you mean, but I'm not sure he's got the quality to cross the ball.

Even if he does thing going past a player, and smashes it across the box, I've seen him do things in that area of the pitch. Just a thought ;)

Certainly agree that he could do damage with those pacey runs of his.

When I seen him go past players out wide right and then cross, it's usually gone for a goal kick or a throw-in other side. He's got to be a striker in waiting, just needs Harry twisting them a bit!
