I don't think even a £14m/£15m bid would have made Reading part company with their top scorer in this window mate as that would be admitting they were down and kissing goodbye to potentially £60m for staying up.

Now in the summer? He will could be available for less than half of that if they go down.

good points both. i'd like to think we'll sign one more forward in the summer, would not be disappointed if it was that lad.

Billy if they are relegated we may be able to get him for £4m or £5m and for a lad with 12 goals in 24 games (at 26 years old), that would be much better value. He is another one of those lads that has come through the lower ranks and has earned his shot at the big time. Still hungry and still desperate to achieve much better and these are the best players to go for.

Fletcher, Graham, Wickham and Le Fondre would tick all my boxes for a front 4 to choose from. Young and hungry players.

Brilliant post mate, I go far enough back to recall the players that you mention and can’t understand the parochial diatribe spouted on here, Ron Guthrie, Dennis Tueart, David Young and Bob Stokoe were integral parts of our FA cup success in 1973, that’s a quarter of the team plus the manager. Tueart shamelessly played to get a move to Man city in 1974 but he is revered (quite rightly) by true Sunderland fans for his performances prior to that.

The tribalism demonstrated on here is hilarious, but sometimes taken a bit far, threatening to boo a Sunderland player because of a light hearted statement he made in the past is childish and counterproductive, I’ve seen too many decent players destroyed by idiots getting on their backs, Kilbane is a perfect example who went on to have a good career post Sunderland but was never accepted here.

If Graham shows as much commitment as Ron Guthrie, Dennis Tueart, David Young, Don Hutchinson and Lee Clarke on the field he will be an asset to SAFC.

Monty. You nailed it in the last paragraph.

Danny Graham has the chance to prove on and off the pitch, that he is more the Guthrie, Stokoe, Tuart and pop Robson type and not Chopra or Clark.

It's telling that those from an earlier era had dignity and class and captured our hearts and minds but those from todays era are bell ends.

You can't just dismiss what Clark did as if it were nothing and those fans who distrust mag supporting players here now are fully justified imo. That said, Graham should and imo will get total backing from fans now he has signed. However, if he does a Clark or Chopra then **** will hit fans all over the wearside area for decades to come.

I've now mellowed towards him after listening to the lad speak, so its up to him now not supporters to do the courting.

Can't believe some of the childish drivel that is appearing on here lately. I have supported Sunderland since 1959 and have seen many people from up the road do a really good job for us.
Our manager has put his faith in a footballer, who as a young man, made some remarks that I suspect he will now regret. There are few people on this forum who will have unwisely made comments they now regret.
The consequences of this campaign will not do SAFC any favours and I imagine will only serve to alienate both DG and M'ON - the latter (he will feel) is being questioned by the fans in his ability to build a team that will bring us out of the doldrums that we have lingered in for most of my life.
FOR SAFC's SAKE LET HIM MANAGE OUR CLUB AND DON'T DESTROY A PLAYER BEFORE HE HAS HAD CHANCE TO PROVE HIS WORTH!!!!!!

Cest, I would never dismiss what Clarke did, he was and still is an idiot and deserved to be hounded out of our club, but you can’t ignore his commitment on the pitch prior to that incident. He was one of our best players and week in week out with good performances.

I have never subscribed to this parochial crap; I have good friends who support Newcastle; including my Son-in-Law (I still don’t know why I let him in the door), Sunderland are my club and I have two season tickets because I love to watch football not shout and scream like a banshee (I leave that to my missus).

I understand the tribalism and still get a lump in my throat every time the lads run out, but it is nothing more than football. Graham, Clarke and the rest are entitled to support who they like and think what they like, as long as they do their job as professional footballers, I find it difficult to criticise them.

NMG and Billy D, you know, those two joined at the hip still bleating on about what a bad signing Danny Graham is. You would have thought that they would just sit back and keep their powder dry in the event that Graham screws up, then come out blazing both barrels. I should have known better, if these two had a brain cell between them they could be dangerous.
Even Cest who objected to the signing when it was first muted has taken a positive step and will judge him on his performances, it's such a pity the other two cant take the same approach.
I honestly hope that if either are ever at the SoL and boo Graham for no other ewason that he is a geordie, that the person sitting behind them gives them a swift smack around the head. It's time these two took their diapers off and entered the real world.

Just an aside here but whilst what a player does on the pitch takes precedence what he does off it, when it was wearing what Clark wore, would have ripped this club in two if he had stayed. That can't be forgotten and Graham has a massive weight of expectation that he can stay free of any of the field 'indiscretions' and 'incidents'.

That said, he starts with a clean sheet now and its totally down to him now.

I wish him every success during his time here, hopefully starting today.

Cest, I would hope that Graham is a lot more balanced than Clarke, who would have ended up in HMP Frankland with his brother if not for his football talent.

As you say, it's now up to him to demonstrate his intent, its no good talking a good fight.
