Here is a scenario which I hope [and Iâm sure most decent Saints fans hope] is purely hypothetical. Portsmouth Football club is liquidated at the end of the season and the PST sets up a new club, which is admitted to the Southern League Division One South and West. With the JCLs dusting off their Man Utd, Arsenal and newly purchased Man City shirts, AFC Pompey are left with the hard core support and draw an average of between 5,000 and 6,000 for home games and are promoted to the Southern League Premier Division at the first attempt. This now brings into play, a league fixture at AFC Totton (average attendance this season â 304). With the large contingent of AFC Pompey fans wanting to attend, coupled with the number of Saints fans that would want to attend [to give Pompey their best wishes and definitely not to take the piss out of us ] this could prove to be a bit of a safety issue. Crowd segregation would dramatically decrease the 3,000 capacity at the Testwood Stadium. Do you think that Hampshire Police would recommend the match be switched to St Maryâs on safety grounds? (perhaps just opening the Chapel stand for Totton and the Northam stand for Pompey would suffice) Do you think the venue change would happen in this scenario? If so what kind of attendance do you think the match would draw and would you go?
Can't see why not technically . . . Nc would make some extra cash . . . just wondering what the reaction would be to that type of game :/
Why should they be allowed to join a step 4 non league? Surely step 6 is appropriate for newly formed clubs!!!
I think the fanbase would be too big for the wessex league. With all due respect for the likes of Scarborough, Darlinton etc, they don't have the same core support. The powers that be may say 'so what' and put us there anyway, but I think step 4 is as low as they could put us without causing serious safety issues at every away fixture.
Do you see that (the bit about Pompey entering step 4) as a serious possibility now for next season dev. It's easy to say from my detatched position, but I reckon if I was a Pompey fan it would now be my strong hope that the PST would take this course rather than try and take on the reins of the old club in League 2. It's worth noting that the Southern League is expanding to accommodate six more teams for next season (to the detriment of the Wessex League, I imagine), and a new club in some reasonable form would probably have no difficulty acquiring a space. You might even get the first promotion free! As for your scenario, I can't really see it, Totton do have a pretty nice stadium and I don't think there would be much by the way of trouble, even if they got a one off extra large gate. You say that some Saints fans might want to attend, but to be fair most Totton fans probably do support Saints as well! You could always have a run at the Hampshire FA Cup, final at St Mary's.
As Pompey's women's team are moving up from the Hampshire Womens League to the National Super League, does this not open a vacancy for their male counterparts?
Not going to happen, is it? But if it did, I might just pay to watch you play Totton, as long as the ****er with the bell doesn't soil his seat again. AFC Wimbledon should be your inspiration if you do go under, btw.
There's no reason they couldn't just limit ticket sales, and if they wanted to sell more they could switch it to Eastleigh or something. Seems unlikely a game like that would be played at St Mary's. Just realised the Silverlake is no bigger than the Testwood. Ah well, Rangers are playing in tiny grounds, I see no reason Pompey can't.
In your ruddy dreams devo....... I really cannot see them allowing Pompey fans sole use of the stadium for the day. After the way some of the fans treated it the last time.......Nah can't see it......what about Eastleighs ground? Tottons ground would only allocate you about 500 seats, you would not get too much more at Eastleigh either come to think of it. Better you don't go down into that league and maybe amalgamate with Havant and Waterlooville or something.
I suspect the game would be made all ticket,of which Totton would sell 2500,leaving Pompey with an allocation of 250,which would have to come to Totton on bubble coaches.
I would be very happy if they did enter at step 4. My home town club is Weymouth (my second team) who play in the Southern Premier, and one promotion for a new Pompey would be a nice little earner for the Terras. (ground capacity 6500)
Surely we are more likely to host Horse of the Year show if we want our pitch damaged. Those lower league plebs kicking lumps out of the hallowed turf, while Pompey fans rip out the seats. Sounds a real goer this one.
I don't think fanbase will have any affect on what happens. Portsmouth will get the number of tickets for away matches that are available...it's not as if the opposition have to fit in every fan that wants to get in.
Not possible as Saints will be home that day in the second leg of a Champions league semi final against Barcelona which they are winning having beaten Barcelona in Spain by 5 goals to Nil in the first leg. The bookies have refused to take bets for Saints in the game as they have a 100% winning record in the Champions league. They will of course take your money if you want to place a bet on a Barcelona win with the odds of 25000 to 1. If you refuse to believe that how about St Mary's stadium will be unavailable as it is being redeveloped to accommodate 50000 supporters as growth in demand for tickets has rocketed following their tremendous success on the field and with the large contingent of Pompey fans who have switched their allegiance to a far more successful and talented club. Or how about Nicola just says sod off we are not having you lot piss on our seats again.
I like your signature, Godders. A knowledge of history or even an interest in it is sadly lacking even in intelligent young people. They know so much, but seem to lack a soul. As they say, people who forget the past are doomed to relive it.
Did the court case happen yesterday about the stadium? (trading standards do not need to be informed about use of this word as it is the general term used for a place where people attend to watch a football match)
